quote:And wouldn't building a home require considerably more immediate cost than a typical mortgage?
The property, which also features a library, three-car garage and workshop, was purchased and built for $130,000.
Even she got a construction loan, those appear to require a considerably downpayment and interest and much more immediate repayment.
So it appears she essentially needed $130,000 cash on hand, far more than the cost of a mortgage in that same time period.
Nothing about this story seems reasonable.

If she had just said she and kids did what they could like x,y, & z and contracted out things she felt too dangerous and uncomfortable with she'd get more props than scrutiny. But they are selling a lie.
If they've got video of a 13 year on scaffolding laying brick/mortar with another sibling throwing up brick to stack, doing decking on roof, doing soffits and gutters, using a blowtorch on plumbing, etc...Not a stillshot, i'll retract.

Brookins is also a motivational speaker and has published fiction novels

There's no way she pulled that off. Even if she had materials and the ability to do the labor, what about the tools and equipment? That stuff is really expensive and certainly not for one time use. Having to buy it or rent it would drive costs up dramatically.

If her address is posted just check Google Earth. Pretty sure you can go back and get images on a year by year basis.

SIAP
I checked out the comments on the article, and as someone in those mentioned if you google her there is a picture of the house being built. In the picture there are clearly 3 or 4 men doing work on the roof. I could believe that she was her own "builder" who hired her own sub-contractors, but they did not do the primary construction on their own.

Friends of mine did that. Then didn't get homeowners because there was no lender to require it.
Yup. Fire happened.

With no building experience, Brookins, 45, and her kids sat and watched hours and hours of YouTube tutorials to teach them how to construct everything.
How'd she get around those child labor laws?

So is this debunked yet? Or perhaps just...bunked...?

No money, eh? Built this house by watching videos, eh? Liar is what she is.

I would say if it was smaller and more modest, yes a possibility. That house, nope.
Yep. Two story brick would require a professional.
One story wood frame? Habitat builds those all the time with volunteer labor. I could probably do it.

I call BS. That house is too big for an inexperienced YouTube watcher to build. Maybe she could have convinced me if she built a tiny house out of an old school bus.

Whose license did she work under to get the HVAC, plumbing & electrical approved by an inspector?
