Anti-Dentites, what's the truth behind the "Deep Cleaning" scam?

Went to a new dentist and they made me stand in front of this newfangled machine, in 10 seconds they determine that I look to have some bone loss and will need a deep cleaning.... never even looked in my mouth before they made that determination. what kind of bull malarkey is that?

I go to the dentist about once every 3-4 years. Never had a cavity. You baws just need to brush and floss more

did they take an xray? if it was an xray then they would be able to see bone loss/problems much better than just looking in your mouth
as if you didn't hate medicine enough already....

Have gone to the dentist every 6 months for 40 years, and are a flossing fanatic, had to change dentists and the new hygienist at the new office gave me the deep cleaning speech, I left and found another dentist.

A dental deep cleaning, or scaling and root planing, is needed in order to remove bacteria, calculus (tartar), and debris that has collected under the gum line. The presence of calculus under the gumline creates a safe haven for bacteria to collect, and cannot be removed by brushing, flossing or with a regular cleaning. The presence of this bacteria causes an immune response from the body. This immune response results in inflammation, to fight the bacterial infection. If left untreated, the infection and inflammation will continue and progress further under the gum line, resulting in loose teeth and bone loss, and ultimately, the loss of one or more teeth.
I'm not a dentist, but if you had calcified plaque under the gum line, the only way to visualize it would be by their so-called "newfangled machine". It would not be visible on clinical exam
ETA: not saying it's necessary, just stating the science behind it

A few years ago I went to new dentists at a national chain. A "specialist" came in during the exam to test my gums. Determined that my gums were infected, and that I would need a special treatment not covered by insurance to wash my tooth gum interface with antibiotics.
They had all kids of promotional pamphlets in the waiting room for this proprietary $1500 miracle procedure.

Which dentist? And why did you change dentist?

Got me on this a few years ago. Miserable experience. Two visit process as they only numb one side of your mouth at a time. Then they jam this instrument down between the tooth and gum and scrape something off. They quoted me a cost for the service and I paid that amount after the first visit. After they second visit (other side) they told me I owe the same amount again. I raised a good bit of hell about that. When you quote a cost, is is standard practice to quote a fraction of it? Only thing worse than dentists is dental insurance.
frick those fake doctors!

My sister fell for this shite. She moved and needed a new dentist. He has great reviews online and seems respected. They told her she needed a deep clean, which would take 2 visits(1 per side). She did it. I think insurance paid most of it. She now goes every 3 months for "perio-maintanence". The hygenist told her once you have gum disease, you always have gum disease and the cleanings need to be every 3 months to keep it at bay.
I told her this is some BS, but she's afraid to tell the hygienist that.
Yes, she brushes at least twice a day with a Sonicare, flosses everyday etc. She did go a few years after college without visiting a dentist though and I think she told the hygenist this and they jumped on gum disease.

There is no code for "deep cleaning". That's clue number one.
If they don't do a periodontal chart (checking the depth of the pockets using a tool) then they are scamming you. If they try to do all four quadrants in one day, there's a good chance they are scamming you.
If you go to the dentist regularly, they are probably scamming you. If you just got new dental insurance some will scam you. If you recently changed dentists some will scam you.
Ask them to perform a pre-determination of benefits prior to the service and that will help eliminate some of the scammers.

No idea what that is. I went to the dentist last week and had a normal cleaning.

I believe I have actually lost teeth due to the deep cleaning/scaling that was done. Not long after I developed infections and had to lose them. I think it's a crock!!!

mouth aids, st. vitus dance, same plaque that ate your dental bones corrodes your veins and destroys your heart...

yeah I did that and then found out my insurance didn't cover it.
Then my dentist makes you put 30% down on procedures even before you get them done. I find that super odd.
