Boss just asked me for a few ideas for 'casual fine dining' in New Orleans. Apparently since I lived in Louisiana 7 years ago I should know all things of the New Orleans dining scene. I told him I knew a guy for some up to date recommendations. By guy I mean TD F&D Board. So if you could shre your thoughts, in my mind he is thinking something like Peche or Patois, La Petite might be at the upper end of what I'd call casual or laid-back fine dining.

To those who are lucky enough to frequent these wonderful establishments, what are your thoughts? Thanks!

Are you looking for lunch or dinner? My first thought would be Cochon or Cochon Butcher.

I'm not sure what he means by "fine dining" with casual in the mix. I would assume he means very good food. Do you know what type of food he likes? Does he want traditional New Orleans, seafood, ethnic, eclectic? Is there a price range? I ask because you said La Petite might be on the upper end. I don't see it that way. You can be pretty casual there, so is it the upper end of price?

The food at Peche is very good. The place is casual...not a fine dining atmophere, but not a dive or anything like that.

La Petite definitely.

fine dining but every time i go there are a bunch of people underdressed by my standards for that restaurant.

Shaya, Peche, Cochon would all be considered "nicer" dining to some cities even though they're not really in NOLA. Think about Beausoleil in BR. It gets recommended in every anniversary/special occasion thread, but it has no nicer of an atmosphere than the first three I mentioned.

When someone tells me in BR that they want casual, I'm suggesting Sammy's type restaurants. When someone says casual in New Orleans, Peche and the like are certainly nicer than Sammy's but they're my recs.

Just my interpretation. I could be totally off from what he means.

To me, it sounds like he wants really good food, not too "out there", wants to be able to wear jeans and a polo, and a nicer atmosphere. I'd say GW Finns, La petit or appoline, Mr Johns, or Domenica would be good options. Find out if he'd perfer seafood, new orleans bistro style, steak, or italian and then choose from those accordingly.

You can dress pretty casual at Emeril's and it impresses out of towners for sure (and is good). Peche and Cochon like others have said are excellent choices. If you can get reservations to Shaya that is hot right now, but tiny cramped and loud.

In all honesty, its easier to just ask people "How much do you want to spend per person, including drinks?"

We can go from there a lot easier

If he wants to wear shorts and flip-flops, send him to Bud's Broiler. Otherwise explain to him that he'd be more comfortable in most places wearing a jacket.

The dress code at Antoine's may a be a joke these days, but the prices are anything but 'casual.'
