What does a "lactation consultant" do?

Breastfeeding is popular in media again (who knows why). Just read article about a lactation consultant posting brelfie's on FaceBook - breast feeding her nephew 'cuz her sister was at work.
Lactation Consultant - sounds interesting. Is there a college degree associated with this?
(can't post link to article for obvious reasons)

They come in the room and squeeze your wife's tits for an hour after the baby is born.
It's awesome.
It's awesome.

I won't lie, breast feeding is "more complicated" than I thought, but it certainly isn't to the levels these women make it out to be. They will make you feel evil for not breast feeding.

They teach new moms how to breastfeed correctly. It is usually a nurse that transitions to this job.

You go through a certification program targeted at nurses with experience in labor & delivery.

It's the latest racket in newborn care. They guilt you into something that's marginally better than formula. There's also several opinions out there about the "benefits." My wife's cousin is one, but she's never had a kid, so no real life application.
Pretty much like this.

I hate to break the news to you guys, but breasts are there for a reason, not just as your playthings.

frick all lactation consultants. Bunch of self-righteous, can't get an actual job, "here try this essential oil to cure that" bitches.
I don't like them. When my wife gave birth to our first the baby ended up in the NICU (for the next week) after the first night. One came into the room and to my almost distraught wife (don't frick with hormones) says that it's a shame since the baby and mom really imprint on each other in the first 72 hours. I could have choked her right there.

I see nobody reacted to this part. We're all good with this?

My wife was never taught how to breastfeed, but she wanted to breastfeed. It is not instinctive and easy. For our first, the lactation consultant actually helped teach her some different techniques that helped tremendously.

I breastfed my son and understand the importance of it and the need for support and help for first time moms but the breastfeeding feminazis drive me nuts.
The "look at me posts" on fb are annoying as are the moms who refuse to be discreet and breastfeed in public in the most attention getting and even aggressive manner, just looking for someone to look at her the wrong way so she can run home, jump on Facebook and tell her story so she can be championed by the other nuts like her.

Yes, has to be an experienced L&D RN, job usually requires a BSN, at least 5yrs experience and a female. They also have to be certified as a Lactation Consultant.

I was warned by a friend to stay away from anyone associated with La Leche League, because they are pretty militant about breastfeeding.
Having said that, a lactation consultant might've been nice because I didn't understand that it wouldn't automatically be easy. I did a much better job of it with our second baby, since I understood that it takes a while before you and the baby are working like a team. Breastfeeding is awesome, but I wouldn't guilt anyone into it. It's not for everyone.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there's a difference between a lactation consultant and a lactation nurse. We had a lactation nurse visit in the hospital and was really helpful and supportive of my wife. Just had her try different things and positions to help make things easier.
I know someone that used a lactation consultant on the recommendation of her friend. They made it through a half a session. The lady was rude and condescending and told her she needed to listen to her if she wanted to avoid being an inadequate mother. For real.
I'm not into this whole new age snake oil bullshite. Modern medicine exists for a reason.

The lactation consultant was a big help to my wife right after our son was born. He wouldn't feed very well at first but eventually took to it very well. My wife breast fed / pumped daily for 1 year, all while still working full time.

Just figure it out yourself and supplement formula if needed.
If you can't get this you should have never had the baby in the first place. Consider putting it up for adoption before you really screw it up.

The lactation lady that came by while we were still in the hospital was a fricking nut.
I'm pretty sure she would have whipped out my wife's tit and sucked on it for her own mental well being.
She spilled maybe an ounce of breast milk on accident and you would have thought the world ended

They're RN's with additional certifications that have to be renewed every 10 years.
They don't breastfeed for you, they teach mothers how to breastfeed and help them when there are issues with them producing milk or the baby consuming milk.

True story...
My EX GF thought breastfeeding was gross because "breasts are for sex. You wouldn't let your child suck your dick, why would I let it suck by nipples?"
