Thinking of getting the Amazon Fire (Tablet)

Amazon has their Fire tablet at a good price which made me take notice of it. It is $49.99 (or 34.99 after Dec 21) LINK
The kids edition is even better LINK. For $84.99 you get the same Fire as above but they throw in a few perks such as:
*Free Amazon Prime for a year
* Free 2 year replacement warranty that covers everything.
*Unlimited, free access to 10,000 kid-friendly books, movies, TV shows, educational apps, and games with 1 year of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited included.
I figure it will be a good investment to have a spare tablet in case our laptops go out. Plus it will be very useful for teaching the baby with fun activities and books.
I can actually get one by using the Coke Points that I have saved up so I can get it free or $40- $50 off in Amazon gift cards.
Does anyone have a Amazon fire and if so what do you think about it?

Amazon Fires hurt the planet

I'm sure it's fine for posting on TD from the crapper. As long as you understand what you're getting in terms of hardware, the worst part about it will be the software, and that can be remedied as well.
I ordered the kids edition for my 4-year-old this year.

I read up on it some and I saw that it has some limitations as to what it can do and it can't do. I know it can't do everything a laptop or PC will do. What is the issue with the hardware with it and how is that remedied?
Mostly I would use it for reading, teach the baby, read to the baby, let her play with it, take on roadtrips, etc.
Do you know if children can play kids game on it, simple educational games, not complex one that are rich in graphics and such?
ETA - I don't think I will tell my husband that it can be used on the crapper. He spends enough time in that bathroom as it is.

The hardware is just barebones. Slow CPU, relatively low-res screen, etc. The "remedy" for that is just understanding it's a browsing/e-mail/youtube tablet. In terms of software, it's just running a bastardized version of Android that may or may not be desirable. I remember the old Kindle Fire from around 2011, and the OS was awful. I'm sure it's come a long way since then, as has Android itself. But if it's horrible, the tablet can be wiped and the OS replaced with a custom ROM or stock android. It can be rooted, it can have the play store on it, etc. Lots of tutorials online. Personally, I'm planning to leave it as is since it's for my kid.

I think that's precisely what Amazon Freetime is for. I don't know much about it honestly. I just wanted to get away from LeapFrog's overpriced cartridge games. It's supposedly arriving Wednesday, and I plan to mess with it before I wrap it up.

Thanks Aspie. I am thinking of telling my husband to buy one for all of his grandkids. It is just such a great price.

The Fire6 is good for traveling. One of the very few 6 inch tablets.

It's good for books and magazines as well as watching Netflix and Amazon prime.
The interface is incredibly jumbled though and not good for organizing according to category or person. Also the silk Internet browser is a POS. I also have problems with charging it sometimes. Make sure it's charging when you plug it in and don't just walk away from it. I also wish I could customize it a bit more with "screen savers" rather than having ads all the time.

My kids have the Fire HD's. They are pretty nice. I ordered the $35 one just to have.
Just a heads up, mine will not be delivered until Dec. 29th.

If you just want something to surf the internet from the couch or bathroom, they are perfect. I did the 6 bundle deal and kept one for myself. No complaints with them. There is an upcharge if you don't want ads on it.

It uses the google operating system, correct?
Posted on 11/29/15 at 12:10 pm to Brian12
It uses Fire OS, which is an Android fork. The interface is Amazon-centric.

I wonder if it comes with all the bundled spyware google likes to put in their software.

I know my kids wouldn't play with theirs and still wanted our iPads until we bought them iPads. I have a few kindle fire things in the closet that haven't been turned on in over a year
