Camp opened for teams at the end of last week, and the first games kicked off last night.

NHL Network Preseason Broadcast Schedule

Should be an awesome season in the Metro as nearly every team got better on paper.

Here's a breakdown of the new 3 on 3 OT rules:
quote:

Here's exactly how it will work:

BASICS: It's 3-on-3 play for five sudden-death minutes.
PENALTIES & POWER PLAYS: If a penalty is taken in overtime, the teams play 4-on-3. (Essentially, the team on the power play just adds another player.) If a second penalty is taken, the teams will play 5-on-3. If a penalty carries over from regulation, the teams will play at 4-on-3.
"At no time will a team have fewer than three skaters on the ice during the overtime period."
IF TIED AFTER OVERTIME: If a goal isn't scored, the game moves to a three-round shootout. Apply the same shootout rules as in previous years.
BE CAREFUL PULLING YOUR GOALIE: If you pull your goalie for an extra attacker in overtime, and the other team scores into your empty net, you'll forfeit the one point you gained by forcing overtime.

I am heading to the Pens/CBJ game tonight. Both teams announced their rosters and neither are skating their top lines. One interesting note, regardless of the outcome they will skate a 3 on 3 Overtime exhibition so both teams can adjust to the new change.

Yea, I mean we already know what will happen with the Caps and Blues, but we still need to play the games

What's the deal with taking away the point if you pull your goalie?

They don't want teams trying to just control the pick with a lot less skaters out there?

I thought the point was to get the games over faster/not in a shootout?

The Jackets are going to have some awesome lines this year. If they can avoid last year's injury plague, they should be pretty damn good. A Foligno/Joey/Saad line has me drooling.

With the issues Ohio State is having offensively, I'll withhold my lofty expectations for what should be a really fun team to watch.

Probably a decision made by the coaches. Having a 5 on 3 if a single penalty is taken makes it insanely easy to score. Something like 50% of 5 on 3s are converted. Teams don't want to be in that position from one penalty. And since they can't remove the pulling the goalie aspect of the game, this is the alternative (basically makes it so that teams will only do it in dire need of a regulation-overtime win to secure a playoff spot and can't afford to win in the shootout).

It's an extremely rare occasion that a team will need a ROW instead of a shootout win, which makes this probably a non-issue anyways. They just wanted to be sure one team didn't find some foolproof plan to beat the system and pull their goalie from the get-go.

Also it is probably rare that anyone in here plays fantasy hockey, but I'm a fanatic for it.

So if you do watch out for these players:
Marko Dano
Chris Tierney
Teemu Pulkkinen
TJ Oshie
Carl Hagelin

and some rookies:
Sam Reinhart
Nikita Zadorov
Nikolaj Ehlers
Sam Bennett
Joonas Donskoi
Artemi Panarin

Mad Max was the third ever American to be named Habs captain by player vote. I just hope the Habs learned how to shoot during the off-season.

They also need to figure out that you are supposed to score during the PP not just pass it around. The PP was horrific, awful, and disgusting. I am being kind in my assessment.

I play FanDuel fantasy, looking forward to the NHL starting for it, usually my best winnings next to CFB.

The Preds looked good yesterday in their 5-2 win and 3-2 OTL against Florida. Forsberg clearly put of the slump he hit at the end of last season

Artemi Panarin

Is going to be real good. I've been watching him in the KHL for years. He's a legit top 6 forward, even on a team like Chicago.

He played on a line with Evgeni Dadonov and Vadim Shipachyov that was dominant for SKA and Russia at the World Championships.

What about Sergei Plotnikov that the Pens signed from the KHL this offseason? He's best buds with Malkin and will start out on his wing. Have seen some high expectations for him.

Chicago's system with his talent= 50-60 point season if he gets top 6 time.

Hell their system can make a ton of 2nd/3rd line tweeners look good.

But yeah, if you're drafting for a season-long team, Dano and Panarin are going to be overlooked by some less watchful GMs and can be picked up really late. Huge value.

What line will Dano be on? I think he's still a year away from a true breakout year. He got a lot better as the year went on though for sure. Loved watching him play, it was bittersweet trading him. But I think that's just the tip of the ice burg for the cbj, their young talent is insane right now.

I'm interested to see how he fits in Chicago's system. I think he was better suited for the CBJ playing style, but that's not a knock on him. I think he's going to be a hell of a player.

Hoping Bjorkstrand gets a shot sometime this year . Kid is a savage. I've been dying to see him play up.

Today's 4th line is Bjorkstrand-Anderson-Milano. I am excited.

Plotnikov doesn't have tons of offensive upside, but if he's playing with Malkin, he should put up some points. He's big and plays physical, so he can be useful even if he goes into a scoring drought. The most points he scored in a KHL season was 36.

Since we have lots of Jackets fans here, I'll be interested to see if Antti Pihlstrom makes the team. Even at 30, he may be the fastest skater in the world. His hands aren't NHL quality though, which is why he left Nashville and returned to Europe.
