I'm not sure even adding Cueto and Gomez is enough to get this team over the hump

Agreed. I said yesterday I'm not sure that we're only a couple of trades away from getting to or winning the word series. What we've done has been great but we've done it despite some pretty glaring holes offensively. That in mind is this the year we want to use our most tradeable assets to get a rental like Cueto or Shark? Does that put us over the top?I don't think so. We need to bide our time with trading top prospects. If there's no doubt were a world series contender and we're a trade away. Go for it. I don't see this as the year we burn those assets

I'd be fine with seeing us acquire a solid starter like Cashner or Ross from the Padres and a bat with some years of control left. Gomez is signed through next year. Those guys could help us out this year and be around next year as well and we would be in a little bit better position to make major moves then (in addition to any off season moves)

Agreed, which is why I tend to stay out of trade discussions. I don't think it's a popular opinion on here.

Yeah and they could possibly lock Gomez up too. He's the type of talent that would be worth committing money to IMO.

Was listening to mlb network radio this morning and they were talking about the Reds being in position to sell off almost anybody on their roster and the host asked if their was a market for Votto and the other guy on the show said he thought he would be a perfect fit in Houston. Lol thoughts?

I don't mind Votto as a player when healthy (he is close to the league lead in OBP every year when healthy), but screw that contract. I cant see the Astros wanting any part of it, either.

Edit: I forget the specifics of it, but isn't he owed around $200 Mill for the next 10 years?

Yes, and that's why my post was mostly tongue in cheek, I can't imagine us coming anywhere near that contract. I do think from a baseball standpoint he increases this teams chance of winning a World Series this year more than anyone else we are rumoured to be pursuing.

So you're saying we should trade him while his stock is high?

Pretty much, we could get some good young talent for him

He was dominating QC, hopefully the launching pad isn't too cruel to him

I think we've already come out ahead in the Cosart trade. Dude has developed some balance issues and get even stay on the field.

Regarding trades, we're going to have to make trades that involve some 40 man guys or guys that would be eligible for a rule 5 pick this offseason.

It's gonna be a huge trade or one for some mid level pieces that move the Hoes/Straily/Grossman/ level players that someone else may want to start a rebuilding project and clears up some cap space for young guys.

Personally, I think luhnow will try to add a bat, a decent pitcher and maybe a lefty bullpen arm. I don't think we went through the last 3 years to sell off our cream of the crop in the minors. But we've got a lot of depth at some positions that need to be thinned out (OF, middle infielders)

Luhnow show now

says if they feel Reed is an answer for this year they will not hesitate to promote. Also says to keep an eye on prospect Tyler Wright f a couple drafts back with major power and could play 1B.

Can Duffy play 1B? If so, why hasn't he been given a chance? I'd like to see us exhaust all options in the minors before going to get someone via trade.

He mentioned him as another guy who can play first. Which makes me think they're doing the opposite you said. Seeing if they can get a guy via trade before bringing someone else up. Or maybe seeing if they can get rid of someone to make room.
