Was first told about the history of that place a few days ago and had never heard of it. Neat and tragic. Anyone every been exploring out there? Any signs of a ancient inhabitants at all? I grew up in MS and have found arrowheads, whiskey jugs, old bottles etc as a kid along creeks and rivers.

I'm no salt water fisherman but I thought I was told its illegal to get on the island. True? I know there used to be some type of statue and columns still standing. I don't know if they're still there.

Very little left of Last island. Mostly under water now.

I have been fishing Last Island for 15 years or so, and in this short time frame I cant even begin to tell you how much it has changed. I can only imagine what it was like before the hurricane of 1856. I read about how there were hotels, camps and even a small casino I think, or it was a dance hall? Its an awesome read if you have the time.

I've read both of the recent books. last Island was once one giant island, that stretched from Terreboone Bay to Caillou Bay. Pelto was a small bay behind the island. Now there are 4 islands left.

no it's not. It is not what it used to be, but there is still pretty significant amount of land. I try to get out on it and walk around it every now and then. A few years back, there was a statue of Jesus on a piling. It's no longer there.

This is the one I read. Published in 2009 so still a fairly recent book. I suggest all of you read it at some point.
