It was Mary, and the statue has moved a few times, most recently it was at the old rodeo weigh in dock at end of California Canal.

Some of you guys may outdate me, but I remember the island when it was 25 mi long and 1 mi wide. The old camp remains on the Gulf side of Whiskey Island were probably 200 yards from the surf. Lol

Many know about Horseshoe Reef, but have no idea why it's named that. One of my best fishing memories was standing on the horseshoe shaped reef that was probably 4 ft high, casting into the cove of the horseshoe w a Mirrolure I "borrowed" from my dad not even knowing how to tie a fishing knot at 9 years old. Hooked a nice one, lost it, told my dad the string broke. He looked at the end of the line and knew I was lying.

That's where I learned how to tie an improved clinch.

My family was related to 2 of the survivors of the hurricane in 1856. Emma Mille and a Dr. Duperier met during the rescue from the storm and resided in New Iberia. He ran the hospital there and they lived in what became Mt Carmel Academy next door. She used her wedding ring to carve her name in a stained glass window still there today.

The books y'all read probably contain some of that stuff. There were plans for an elaborate St Charles Hotel on the island prior to the storm, but there was much debate as to what actually existed, IIRC.

At the end of Trinity. The piling is still there but the statue is gone.

Indeed it was Mary:

When we camped on the island as kids in the 70s, there wasn't many spots on the main island that you could hear or see the surf from the bay side.

Trinity canal is getting silted in bad. There were numerous houseboats there when I first started fishing the area. I don't think a houseboat would be able to get in there. Its hard to believe how much it changed in the little time I fished it, much less from 150 years ago.

whole article: LINK

Bro-in-law grew up in Chauvin, and has pics of the cuts in the backside of island with houseboats where they used to go to all summer. It was apparently a really neat spot, slowly disappearing.

Horseshoe Reef

I've wade fished horseshoe reef. If it was 4' above the water surface when you were a kid, it may have been an old indian shell midden. there were bunches of those along the coast, many removed for roadbeds in historic times.

The book have pictures of the planned giant hotel, that was never built after the hurricane wiped everything out.

Yep. That was after my divorce. I was burning the candle at both ends and partying like a frat boy.

My dad thought it was just a natural reef for a long time, but even as a kid, it was just too perfect for me to believe it.

A few years ago I heard about a reef being donated by the family of a man who died, using some scrap metal and concrete.

So I looked it up somehow on the internet and actually found where the stones were donated and placed by a company probably not long before I was stepping on them in the mid 70s.

Can you imagine what they could have done with all the concrete slabs the government paid to haul away from NOLA after K? Heard they couldn't use it because of the rebar. Is the steel on the rigs different from rebar to that extent?

I wonder what they plan on doing with that stuff...

Where the settlement of last island existed is now a couple hundred yards offshore.

The state is about done restoring the Barataria chain and they are now shifting focus to the Timbalier and Isle Dernieres chains (whiskey and e timbalier up next). If they ever find the money to put the Terrebone chains back together, it will be time to redo Barataria again.

As for camping, I know Raccoon Island has signs all over it due to the pelican rookery, but I think the others are fair game.
