I think the Braves is probably the best answer overall. Well over ten years where they could have won a world series pretty near every year - but only walked away with the best in show once.

The Hurricanes from 2000-2002 have been omitted so far in this thread tho. Despite one loss they didn't get a bid to the BCS Championship in 2000 (losing a close game on the road to a highly ranked opponent at the start of September), they won it all in 2001, and they were a single play away from running the table again in 2002.

I'm a homer but LSU is a great contender for this. Had they won the title game in 2011 and Mathieu isn't kicked off the 2012 team, I think we have a great chance of going back to back. 2003, 2007, 2011, and 2012 is pretty damn strong.

Early 90's Blazers. Poor Drexler, I was always a fan.

Greatest "almost dynasties" of all-time?

UGA 1980-1983. What actually happened:

80: 12-0, SEC champs, national champs
81: 10-2, SEC champs, lost sugar bowl
82: 11-1, SEC champs, lost sugar bowl
83: 10-1-1, beat #2 texas in cotton bowl

Rest of the story:

80 is self explanatory. In 81 Herschel had his worst game in college as we lost to clemson, but they won the natty so it wasn't that shocking. We were up on Pitt in the Sugar Bowl late when Dan Marino hit a long bomb to give them the win. In 82 we were undefeated and going for another natty in the sugar bowl against Penn State. Once again, up late in the game and todd blackledge hits a long bomb to give them the win.

If you take away just 2 passes over those 4 years, UGA would have gone 45-2-1 over that stretch with 3 straight SEC titles and 2 national titles.

The Tarkenton Vikings were the 70's version of the Bills.

I would add Texas baseball at various intervals. Take your pick of the time period... 35 CWS appearances. Only 6 titles.

Oregon football 2009-Present

Florida State from 1987-2000 is mindblowing. I think they already qualify as a dynasty, but the intensity of their dynasty could have been preposterous.

From 1987-2000, 14 seasons, Florida State finished the season ranked in the Top 5 of both the AP and Coaches' polls.

They were 152-17-1 during that stretch. The finished the regular season with 1 loss or less in 10 of 14 seasons, yet "all" they have is 2 NCs to show for it. Pretty incredible.

Minnesota lost 4 super bowls in a rather short time frame

the mid 80 Mets qualify imo. 85 finished a game or two out, 86 won it all, 87 just missed playoffs again and 88 damn dodgers

The Eagles with McNabb were awesome.

Could not win the NFC Championship.

When they finally won one they lost to Tom.

My first choice hasn't been called yet: Patrick Ewing's Georgetown

82: Freddie Brown pass to James Worthy away from winning an NC
84: Won NC
85: Lost NC to a coked-out Villanova team that almost literally pitched a perfect game
