Any thoughts of what these programs could be?
Really anything. Open space for passive recreation that doubles as stormwater detention. Skate park. Cyclocross trails. Archery. R/C planes/cars. Ropes course. Adventure playgrounds. Urban agriculture. Whatever. Hell, in school we studied parks with places for prostitution and heroin (not recommending that here ). I don't have the answer to what it should be. That's what public design charrettes would be for.

This. It'd be nice to have a (more) legit course on this end of town.
This is what I am all for. I hate the hassle of having to drive across the river to go play. It will be interesting if Zurich stays the same week as it is now. Having Zurich and Jazz Fest going on side by side could be great or golfers could say it's a distraction.

Before it was a golf course it was a backwater swamp. What something was is not always what it should be.

New Orleans Botanical Gardens
Carousel Graden
Train Garden
City Splash
Putt Putt (City Putt)
Dog Park (City Bark)
Equestrian Farm
Big Lake (boat & bike rentals)
Temurry Trail
Museum of Art
Couturie Forset (60 acre forest)
Story Land
Stanley Ray playground
Starbucks playground
26 lighted tennis courts
Many athletic fields that can be rented
Tad Gormley (The Beatles)
Pan- America
400-meter running track from 92 Olympic time trails
Festival Grounds (Voodoo, Hogs, etc) with walking path
4 miles of bike path
Disc Golf
The oldest freshwater fishing rodeo in the country
And 1 sorry excuse for a golf course. It's so sad when conventions are in town they shuttle folks out of town for golf outings. A city like New Orleans needs this upgrade IMO. It's not like all the things I mentioned above are just going to disappear with this addition. I'm not even a golfer.

But it will 100% prevent the hippie and hippie lawyer from winning.

...That's my point. Previous use does not dictate future use.

You make a valid point about the allocation of limited space to a single activity. However, it's not like the entire park is being turned into a golf course and my understanding is that the footprint of the new course will actually be smaller than the area dedicated to the old courses. I also think City Park is among the largest city owned parks in the country. But the bottom line is that City Park needs the revenue stream. If I'm not mistaken, New Orleans doesn't spend a dime on the park. It's totally supported through various foundations and the revenue it can generate from activities. I've got to assume that a feasibility study was conducted and the new course is projected to be a money maker.

Regardless of your point it's currently not a nature preserve. It's an abandoned golf course. Thankfully almost 10 full years later it's finally being fixed.
These hippes should go climb a tree on the Lakefront because that area needs attention. While they are at it the Fly could use some TLC too.

It doesn't, and open areas are important. But we used to have 4 golf courses in the park and the new plan is to have 2.
The southern end of the old East course (between Wisner, Harrison, I-12 and the softball complex) will still be mostly open area.
That is where hippies can still do hippie stuff.

Is Boover a common name in New Orleans? It just occurred to me that the Mount Carmel/LSU chick who tried to shoot her mother was named Nicole Boover. If "Lloyd" and Nicole are siblings, their parents must be SO proud!

Here are the numbers I've seen floating around:
$13 million - cost of building new course
$500,000 - annual cost for maintaining the course.
I have a feeling City Putt (the city park putt putt course) is going to end up being more profitable than this new golf course...

Have you seen any projections on how many rounds are forecasted to be played annually and what the green fees might be? I imagine there'll also be some food and beverage revenue and cart rental income.
Accurate or not, somebody had to put together a cash flow projection justifying the new construction. They're not building this thing to lose money.

The City will be out ZERO dollars, If you think they are building this course without the numbers to back this up, think again. This will be NOTHING like what was/is there now. They've hired one of the TOP course architects in the WORLD. This will make money for the park and the city.

Exactly. The park needs the revenue, just the rounds from conventioneers will be pretty staggering. Add in locals who aren't members of clubs and I really see no chance of this being a risk in the long term for any entity.

Even though I'm against a second course, you can't look at numbers in vs out and base it soley on the course. If the course can hold a PGA tournament, regional economic dollars come in to play. I admit the financial pros of the course are legitimate.

The city is out zero dollars no matter what happens. The park gets its portion of public funds from the state and some federal grants, which isn't a lot. I want to say it's maybe 20%, but my numbers could be wrong, so don't quote me on that.
