I remember in 6th grade I forged my fathers signature on my progress report (4 1/2 Week Grades) I told myself I will pull them up and nobody will ever know.

Around rolls report card time and I pull 2 solid d's and an F. My father meets with teacher, asks why they never told him about my troubles, they show him forged progress report and say we sent this to you.

That beating is the most vivid of my life. I remember my sister begging my father not to kill me right before her and mom left the house.

Congrats on having a kid that is smart and has good study habits.

This isn't always the case, and motivation tactics have been proven to not always be effective.

I was a horrible student pretty much my entire life. I think I graduated out of the kindness of coaches and teachers hearts. It wasn't until one failed stint in college, and a crap job for minimum wage for two years that I realized I needed to grow up.

The sucky part is at that point I was footing the bill for my own education and no longer had daddy to bail me out, but it made me a better student and I ended up graduating and going on to get my masters.

But you are living proof that spanking isn't necessarily a cure for bad grades

And good job on eventually coming around

I would have never gotten away with that cause my parents hard report cards, progress reports, etc marked on the calendar and they were waiting for them when I got home.

I also never made anything below a c and only a couple of those in high school

I can attest to it. Parents who have children who make bad grades are going to have to give up somethings and focus on their kids for a little while until they turn things around. If that means sitting at a desk with them for 3 hours helping them with homework every night you got to do it. My parents never even made me do homework.

I was in gifted classes since elementary school. Got a few D's in middle school. I just didn't care, was lazy, and didn't realize how much my education at that time affected my future. I was smart enough to make up for it, but now realize that if you want to make something great out of yourself, it starts way back then. No waiting until tomorrow. That mentality is what separates standout people from us regular folks.

Probably a dumb idea, because he's just a kid, but I'd try to explain to him the importance of making good grades and where that can lead you in life. Basically show him the kind of people who went through high school making D's and F's and where that life decision led them.

I wish my parents would have done that, rather than just tell me that I had to make good grades. I guess their style worked too because I made good grades, but it felt like I was making the grades for them, rather than myself. I also have a lot more "formal education" than my parents, so they couldn't really use themselves as examples of where I could be if I did well academically.

Well that illuminates a lot.

When standardized test scores go in line with grades you have to start to wonder if you are in denial of intelligence.

If he is smart and it really is just a lack of motivation, give him a summer job somewhere of back breaking morning to dusk work in LA heat to give him a taste of the lifestyle of most who can't go to college.

If he still doesn't care, then at least he knows what he is getting into.

It doesn't matter how smart or clever you are, you need that degree in something (literally anything) to get you into the door.

Thought about making him put on an orange jumpsuit to pick up trash one day. That or let him bake in the sun clipping the grass by hand to see how fun labor is.
