We have a slot receiver. Picked him up last year, Stills.

Saying that we have all our money tied up in a roster that isn't improving is like saying spending money replacing a Kia for a Ferrari to win a race is bad. Hmm, we gave up probably the worst starting free safety in the NFL to get the best and had to pay for it? Yeah, that makes no sense at all. --- sarcasm

You misunderstood. I said if our current roster doesn't excel and gel... then there is no money to go out in free agency to fill needs.

Where do you see the deficiency for next year that they would need to spend a ton of money in free agency? Also, they weren't supposed to make a splash this year and they sign Byrd and lock up Graham. Why would next year be any different?

Re-signing Strief was also unexpected this offseason.

How do you resign Galette now if he hits 12 sacks this season?

How? BRL has a point. Jenkins was a terrible safety. Outside of blitzing, he was pretty terrible at everything else. One of my biggest frustrations with him was his inability to create turnovers. Byrd brings that + experience + proven talent + sound tackling to our defense. Having someone over the top of your defense that you can trust to make plays will make the entire defense play better, starting with the DB's. The only leverage you have right now is that it all looks good on paper, because we haven’t seen them play… but considering last year's personnel and output, we can safely assume that this defense will be solidified for years to come.

Going into the 2014 season, this IS one of the best teams in football. That's not the homer talking in me either, this is a general consensus that you're apparently not a part of.

At least he gave an answer. You didn't. You are dodging my question.

Extend Drew Brees' contract. Restructure some long term deals or let him walk. Cutting Bunkley seems like a logic move that saves us almost $3 million. Hawthorne may be in trouble too

We actually have a lot of good options going forward. This was our cap hell offseason, and we resigned Graham and signed the best FA available that fills a HUGE need.

We struggled to force turnovers, so we picked up the best at forcing turnovers.

How? Maybe we just won't.

Teams lose good players all the time because they have to re-sign or sign other contributing players to their team.

Most teams in the NFL don't even have 2 10+sack players, hell some teams don't even have 1. It isn't about keeping the 1-2 guys that put up big #s, but putting together a DL that gel together and create constant pressure - see Seattle's DL.

Galette is an above average pass rusher, but he was below average/average run defender (see first game against Seattle and his 'instincts' created major gains for Wilson when he faked a handoff)

But you say our secondary "is great". Yet you want to lose a kind of WR we're missing in this offense that could possibly be a star for a CB-Verrett (Kind of 'deep' in that for our secondary) and a slot receiver-Landry (See Stills and Colston play the slot a good bit). So say the 10mil we saved off Byrd, who do we spend it on..Malcolm Jenkins?

The secondary was ranked 4th in the league and that was with the worst rated safety in the past 3 years playing back there.

PFF numbers, real numbers, missed tackles, turnovers, pass coverage, etc. for Byrd are ALL better than Jenkins.

I'm not sold on Junior, not sure why anyone else is either. He had a good year last year, but he was effectively playing as a defensive end, not a linebacker. Ryan's defense is most effective when you are left guessing which guys are coming after your QB. He's also sub-par against the run, and is a liability against a scrambling QB.

I'd keep Cam Jordan and/or Hicks over him any day.

Its more of the fact that I know Landry will adjust to the pros quicker than almost any other receiver and I have no problem swapping Landry for cooks if it gets me another first round player and my third rounder back.

Lets see; double digit sacks last year, high motor, and from what I'm reading he's giving Armstead all he can handle in practice. Yea I don't know how he could contribute at all. He doesn't play in coverage so he sucks. By the way, you know what can demoralize a defense more than not knowing where the pressure is coming from? Knowing and you still can't stop it.

So you're saying that Ryan's defense is most effective when you don't know where the pressure is coming from, and yet people knew Junior was rushing the passer most of the time last year, and he still had 12 sacks, and you're not sold on him because of it?
