how can we improve our educational system?

Spending billions of a dollars a year, and yet its common for people to say that the "system is failing" doesn't make sense to me. Spending big bucks to get the most advanced technology in school doesn't make sense to me.
School is about learning, plain and simple. We never gather data on whether students are doing their homework or not, and never hold the parents responsible for their children. If we want to see improvements its starts with our investments, then the ones taking care of our investments.
Its revolting to listen to people complain, and all I can say is how much time does anyone today spend studying or doing homework?

If parents would spend more time with the kids and ensure they were doing homework that alone would make huge changes.
But the public system has holes.
I had a teacher in Highschool who had nails so long she couldn't hold a piece of chalk.
It was disgusting. The only thing I learned that year was how to play Spades, Canasta and rummy.

Re-electing Obama for a 3rd term.

Honestly though, increase teachers pay. BUT, have the right to fire a lazy teachers arse whenever needed.

Having more engaged parents. The education system is the water, not the horse shepard.

Until we have discipline in schools, and the teachers are given control again, nothing is going to change. It's impossible to teach when there are discipline problems in the classroom, and the delinquents have no fear of the punishments they receive, which are basically just warnings over and over again.

The root problem is that our schools rely on student participation to be effective which used to come from parents giving a damn. There are just too many broken homes thanks to our public assistance system that has made broken homes an economically viable family model. Without addressing the much bigger social issue of broken homes, there really isn't much that can be done that won't be a bandaid.
That being said, one of the bigger problems with how we educate is the one size fits all college prep model. If you gave students paths that made more sense to them and helped them focus on things that interest them, they might actually care enough to take advantage of their educational opportunities.

Get the federal government the frick out of the schools. Ever since they got involved it's all gone downhill fast.
Let the individual communities run their own schools. The good ones will flourish without the government meddling and the bad ones won't drag the good ones down with them.
Get rid of all the retarded standardized, leap like tests.
Make teachers and parent accountable for their students.
Don't be afraid to let some bad apples go. No child left behind my arse. Some people are just shite heads and there's no helping them.
People should be more personally responsible and when they're too young to be then it's the parents job.

That's our country's problem in general, Federal govt. getting too involved in states decisions.

1. Allow un-PC topics to be part of discussion in high school
2. allow corporal punishment for children as a last resort punishment
3. allow those who don't care if they fail to be left behind
4. Stop treating everyone as if they MUST go to college to be a success. Trades are extremely valuable and students should be allowed to explore them in school.
5. teach actual skills in high school or at least make it more of an option (cooking, auto shop, wood shop, agriculture, accounting, welding, electrical work, software engineering, ect)
6. A greater focus on civics.
7. More and earlier foreign language courses to build fluency.
8. Abolish public sector unions. You already get to elect your bosses. There's no need to screw over taxpayers as well.
I think our schools spend too much time trying to teach many kids Physics, Calculus, and literature (does every American really need to learn how to analyze poetry and English novels every single year?)
Not everyone needs to go to college, most people shouldn't go to college, and most people won't go to college, so let's be adults about this and stop making our kids believe that that is the only choice for them.

A) We cannot improve our educational system. The system is not the problem, the parents (or lack thereof) are.
B) Make it ALOT more difficult to get an educational degree and compensate teachers more.
That would attract some of the brighter students out of high school and the end product teacher would be better.
B is irrelevant because A will never change. This is the system in which we have which is a direct reflection on the state of our country.
