The point is his family was there before the government and paying for the rights. The BLM was formed and took control but they had an agreement which the BLM reneged on by not performing upkeep or preventive maintenance on the property.

There is a "new breed" of police/sheriffsdeputies slowly changing the way they operate...the militarization of our local police are changing the tide in the Federal gov'ts favor...

We need to look no further than the majority of "new hires" on Police departments...

The militarization of our police force has been taking place for a long while...

The County sheriff was once considered the ultimate law of the land and they are slowly being turned against us...

Our conservative sheriff in my county was confiscating peoples firearms during Hurricane Katrina, just as much if not more than what took place in New Orleans...

Will the Growing Militarization of Our Police Doom Community Policing?

a good place to start
Rise of the Warrior Cop: The Militarization of America's Police Forces: Radley Balko: 9781610392112: Amazon.com: Books

from the Cato institute

Overkill: The Rise of Paramilitary Police Raids in America | Cato Institute

^ ...and maybe watch the movie Red State, and consider that it may end up being more prescient than satirical, and that the overkill-type response & subsequent coverup presented in this movie has already happened to many people who did nothing more than commit minor infractions or were simply the victims of bureaucratic mistakes (like being at the wrong house), rather than just to the members of a Branch Davidian-style cult as shown in the movie.

if (I started to say "when" here) the populace ever realizes that no matter which way they vote, most of the "leaders" in Washington DC keep making things worse. The leadership in DC routinely encourages "popular uprisings" in other countries, and is quick to condemn the governments and leaders of those countries for their heavy-handed efforts to suppress those "popular uprisings." But, how would our own leaders react in similar circumstances? Since we have in the US some constitutional and legal restrictions against the use of the regular military to put down "popular uprisings" and since there is still a limit beyond which official mendacity about compliance with those restrictions becomes so obvious that even they are (for now) reluctant to go that far. So aside from characterizing military operations as "rescue missions," the other approach is to slowly convert police departments from being all about "law enforcement" to being more of an offensive fighting force. A big part of this is establishing a pervasive "us-versus-them" mindset, so that people who are supposedly "public servants" will consider themselves to be part of a different, higher class, one that has "special rights" that "ordinary citizens" do not have. That's what those books mentioned above describe, and those armored fighting vehicles (often cleverly marked "rescue" to pretend their true purpose is something else) in those pictures are real-world evidence of this transition.

He may not give a shite about "winning". Some people do shite just on principle. He's taking a stand against a shite arse gov't that keeps f$%king people over while counting on most to be too cowardly to stand up. I applaud him.

Yeah it is a messed up situation. I can see both sides. I'm all for small government, but people are getting a bit carried away with thinking that the government just came in and stole this guys land.

The Bundy's are not claiming the land was theirs. As was mentioned in an above post, the land belongs to the state of Nevada, located in Clark County.

The Bundy family has been working this land since 1877, and paying fees to do so up until the 1990s. The BLM stepped in because of some gophers living there that are on the endangered species list.

Bundy, stopped paying the fees because he discovered that the BLM was using the fees being payed contrary to the original contract. The fees were being used to drive Bundy, and other ranchers off the property.

There is more information developing on this today. Remember, this is state land not Federal.

It seems that one Harry Reid, is involved in getting this land clear of ranchers for the purpose of selling it to the Chinese for development of solar energy farms. As per the Drudge Report.

If no one has mentioned it yet:

this same agency (BLM) had planned to kill hundreds of these tortoises just last year, in this very same area, when budget cuts caused a local wildlife preserve to shut down.

True. But sending a freaking army with armor and helicopters and snipers and K9's to intimidate crowds and 'free speech pens' on public land and tazing people who've done nothing but exercise their free speech rights and generally do everything in their power to be as intimidating and escalating the situation as possible....

Kinda trumps the offense.

Sheriffs departments get cows off public land all over this country every day and have been doing it forever.

They also enforce evictions and tax sales and RARELY is that ever a violent confrontation. And never is it one requiring a couple hundred federal stormtroopers to swoop in.

If you owe the feds money, they generally can get that without you ever actually meeting a fed in person via the IRS.

But in this case, the guy said no.

ERRRRRBODY FREAK OUT.

You have followed the money and discovered the real force behind this. 1.27 Million dollars in oil and gas leases that have already been issued....more to come. Only one thing standing in the way....time to get him out.

The man is clearly using poor judgement but the way fedgov is escalating this with force is concerning at best.

There is a better way to resolve these things.

Agree with all of that. He is wrong, but why not just arrest him not put on a military style show.
