Why do out-of-towners say "N'awlins"?

It grates my nerves. Local pronunciation of New Orleans is nothing remotely close than "N'awlins". Then while they are saying it they bob their head. Wtf is this about? Other than the late Frank Davis' "Naturally N'awlins" thing on local tv, nobody fricking says it.

They are just trying to be cool and fit in, but they fail everytime.

Why do certain folks say "French Quarters"?

because nothing has ever been produced for tourists that says N'Awlins
you are dumb as frick

It's written correctly, you just need to actually say the New part instead of just the N. Newawlins just looks strange. That's how I say it at least, although it looks strange typed. Newawlins.

Saying NOLA is the new Nawlins.

It's a fun embellishment of New Orleans' accent and speech patterns. Tourists give us money and are a huge part of our economy. I don't think it's wise to have too much disdain for them.

"New OrLEENS" isn't acceptable right? I think they would otherwise say it like that and go too far trying to correct themselves.

Same reason some locals say 'batin ridge'

I am much more annoyed when they say New Or-LEE-ans

So you have never been a tourist somewhere and mispronounced the name of something there?

I like "Nawlins" and people don't use it in speech, but it's cool in print and such.

1. Because they have not been there and they saw the movie "The Big Easy" 20 years ago.
2. Because it is printed like that on t-shirts sold in the shops on Bourbon street.
Other than this, exposure to the pronunciation is limited to Janis Joplin lyrics.

Nawlins and Loseeanna, both really irk me when I hear people say it. Especially people from Louisiana.

We had a waitress correct my wife on the pronunciation while we were in San Francisco. According to her it's New Orleeens (accent on second syllable).
I guess she's heard Proud Mary one too many times.
