but it would be easier to go AA on one award like I usually find.

If you can piece together an award that isn't showing up on the website by entering in MSY-HNL, you can call in and ticket it over the phone for no fee.

Btw, how did you spend the $1,000 on your debit card for the Citi Gold bonus?

Bought 2 One Vanilla Visa $500 gift cards, but I'm reading that you can actually just load your SERVE card to qualify for the $1k spend.
Get you one of these. It's free.

I didn't know that. I checked last night by going MSY to SEA or LAX and then LAX or SEA to HNL and found awards available on both, but it was 2 different searches. Since they're both on awards I can get AA to meld it into one itinerary? That is awesome if so and for the info.

So I just get this One VIP card and go to CVS or Walmart and load $500 at a time and pay $3.95 each time and that's it? I can then spend the money from the Serve card like an AMEX pretty much anywhere? Sweet! I guess you just cancel the service after you spend it and then you don't even pay the $1 per month. Although you probably keep that going since you seem to be doing this more often

ETA: Sorry one more question, is it cheaper or easier to do the Serve route? Just wondering why I wouldn't just go buy the Vanilla $500 cards like you did? I really need to step up my game compared to you guys

You should be able to load serve with your debit card at home using the website.

No walmart needed

Yep. There are routing rules that you have to obey, but for domestic it's fairly straight forward. You can't back track, and layovers have to be less than 4 hours unless there is no flight available and in that case you have up to 24 hours.

I have actually back tracked from MSY to CLT to get to LAX and I had to get a supervisor over ride who did allow it.

Actually, you can just load $200 daily directly from your Citi Debit card to Serve by linking it. Then, link your bank account and after 5 daily $200 loads you can withdraw the $1000 to your bank account. All from the comfort of your couch.

Yeah, don't cancel it. You can buy gift cards at CVS, then go to a Family Dollar or Wal Mart and load them on to the Serve card. It only costs you the fee of the gift card you bought. Only certain types of gift cards work at Wally World. Good tool to have to meet minimum spends.

I load these at Family Dollar:

I have the IHG card. I was thinking of getting one in the wife's name. Would I be able to put her points on my rewards account or would it be better to set up her own rewards account. Also will consider Marriot. Looking for advice from the board from those with more knowledge than myself.

Welp, I guess I know what I'll be doing for the next hour or so

Which would fulfill the $1,000 debit for Citi, correct?

So you're saying I can link my Citi Gold acct and just put the $1,000 in Serve back into my bank account and I will still have met that $1,000 debit spend? Are you serious? Haha, you're good at this

I guess that's where I get confused is the "load" part; why would you need to load the Vanilla card to Serve? Can't you just spend the Vanilla like a Visa or I'm missing a key part?

The idea is to "spend" money without actually spending it.

Buying the $500 Visa for $504.95 will usually produce at least $10 in points on the credit card you used to purchase.

By loading Serve with the $500 and then taking the money back as cash, and paying off the CC, you have only spent $4.95 total but your CC company thinks you spent $504.95.

Therefore, depending on card used, you spent $4.95 but earned at least $10, profiting at 5 or more depending on redemption. IE 2% cash back card, redeeming for first/business class seats which could mean upwards of 4 or more cents per point, etc.

But yes, sometimes people will just use the Visa as regular cash, because they were getting near the bonus spend time requirement of 3 months, so just "prepaid" expenses ahead by procuring gift cards they could use later.

The taking back as cash part is where I have the Serve linked to my bank account and basically just deposit it back? Or do you get the cash a different way?

I just got approved for the SW Chase and I need to drop $2k quick so I think I know where some may go

Any idea how long those SW points take to drop into acct? I'm trying to book a flight for the wife and I from our white Christmas in Park City to go to New Years in NOLA and SW has good points flights from SLC to MSY. I want to book now but haven't even gotten the card yet

When your Chase statement is available you should see them pop up in your Southwest account the same or next day.

You can do that. I like to billpay it towards a different CC than the one I used to purchase the GC with. I regularly carry about 6 CCs in my wallet not counting ones I'm doing bonuses on so I always have some balance that I could put it towards.

I like to hide the ball a bit just in case.

Same here. Not a whole lot of evidence to support the extra moves, but it's a proactive approach just in case.

Ok, good. Will spend the $2k quickly and hope to get points at beginning of Dec then. Flights may still be available.

Afro, let me make sure I understood. I just went on AA.com and saw MSY to SEA lands at 9:50pm for 12,500 miles. Then from SEA to HNL leaves at 5:20pm next day for 22,500 miles. Can I make that one connecting flight that cost 22,500 miles total since it's within 24 hours? I called AA and they said it would be 35,000 miles as it is 2 separate flights (12.5 + 22.5).

35,000 is still better than the 50,000 it shows right now when I try to just book MSY to HNL, but I'd much rather it at 22,500 which it should be since they have saver award availability open all over (LAS, LAX, SEA, etc). Not sure why they don't allow that. Did I need to talk to a super or did I misinterpret what you said wrong?

I've never dealt with this issue domestically, but according to the rules, it would seem to me that if you are taking the next available award flight out within 24 hr you should qualify.

I'd push to speak to a supervisor, but I can't speak on personal experience if it actually does qualify.

Love park city. Grew up going there every year. It's still my favorite area to snowboard, but damn it's grown tremendously in the last 10 years. Where are y'all staying ?

Yeah, I'll do some more digging. I held the flights for now and that way I can try to get them to make it one flight. I don't see why not. I've had their shitty award travel have me land somewhere late at night and then have to leave the next day so why can't I do it.

My friend has a house there and he also mentioned a hookup at some high end spot. He's got it all dialed in. I don't own much winter clothes

Exactly. The AA ticketing system doesn't always get it right. You should be eligible to make that one award. I'd ask to speak to a supervisor.

I sent an email last night, just didn't feel like talking, want to see what they say to that and then will call. You have to be prepared for battle on these phone calls sometimes so I need to get ready

Slippers will still be coming with me for NOLA but yeah, gonna have to get some gear. I look forward to going to Deer Valley and they have some really good restaurant there, I'm sure you've been.

Just looked on Alaska and that flight from MSY to HNL is available on their miles for only 20k. Finally got around to applying for the AS Visa. I did the one with a $100 statement credit, do I have to wait till I spend the $1k to get the miles too? It seemed like the min spend was just for the statement credit. How fast did you get your miles? And you can keep doing the AS card every 3 months? Saw the million miles guy said he did 5 in one day.

Damn, in the last month I've done the Prestige, CitiGold checking, SW, and now Alaska

Miles post on application being accepted.

The $100 comes after you hit 1,000.

Afro, at Walmart and they have no idea about this Serve stuff..surprise surprise. I wanted to see which cards will work. They said no gift cards only debit cards to load to Serve. Is that right? Just got my Southwest card today and need to do a quick spend so wanted to do $500 right now. Any idea what does work at Wally? We don't have Family Dollar here. We have Longs and Walgreens. Let me know what you think, thanks
