last years thread
Yeah, he's on the wrong team, but at some point you are talented enough to get on the floor. He is not a 3, but a small ball 4. His trade value has bottomed out and is nearing the end of his deal (I think), any suggestions on who should grab him?
Lakers seem to want to play small.
Rockets?
Mavs could use some fresh legs in the frontcourt, but are fighting for the playoffs.
Denver? Faried could be on the move, but they've got their top two wings coming back.
He could give the Clippers a different look of the bench.
Bulls?could he crack the rotation there?
Spurs are great at turning players careers around..
Also, where to send Thad Young? Not that they would ever do it, but Turner and Young for Deng or Boozer works, gives Chicago a second creator.

I really thought he was gonna be a top 10 player in the L

He's playing 17mpg
You said the same thing last year when he wasn't getting playing time. "Oh he's a bust!"
Then when he got a chance to play, he averaged 19/9 in the 21 games he played 30+ minutes and 14/6 the last three months of the season
You disappeared when that happened though

Hence the linked thread. 17 mpg isn't too great as top 3 pick in his 4th year. He was productive late last year, but again he is good enough to be on the floor? He got burn last year because Love went down and AK was wearing out. The team keeps signing 3s so he obviously isn't going to play the SF.When he was drafted did you think Corey Brewer was going to start over him in year 3?It's still early but his efficiency is way down.
Anyway as top 3 pick its undeniable that he has failed to live up to expectations. He is in a bad spot, which is more of the point of this thread. However, having his fans come here and support him was expected. I'd expect at least a trade idea to pop up.

I'm not a "fan", he's just not a bust
We could list actual top 3 busts
We could list actual top 3 busts

From ESPN today:
quote:
From Michael Beasley to Hasheem Thabeet to Evan Turner, being the 2nd overall pick behind a surefire talent at No. 1 can be burdensome. For Williams, being the consolation prize to Kyrie Irving has to be difficult, and it's a task made more difficult by his lack of positional identity.
Williams has suffered from back spasms that have kept him in and out of the lineup, but hasn't shown much development in the minutes in which he has appeared. His shot selection greatly reduces his efficiency and his insistence on being a wing takes away his inherent advantages.
He's got a powerful frame and great leaping ability, and as an above-the-rim finisher, he'd be ideal as a target in pick-and-rolls. Instead, he pops off his screens and lingers around the perimeter, taking off-balance, off-the-dribble jumpers with limited success. Defensively, he lacks the ability to fight through screens (a must as a perimeter defender), and is often late or absent on weak-side rotations, and listless at showing on screens as a big.
Verdict: Unless something changes drastically, Williams is likely a bust. In order for him to be effective, he has to play with a higher energy level consistently and use his athleticism to be a force on the glass and convert loose balls and offensive rebounds, all the while refining his perimeter shot selection.

Remember when people actually thought there was a discussion about the number one pick between Williams and Kyrie?

He needs a change of scenery

If Adelman can't make it work for you, then you've got some problems. Still too early to call him a bust, but he hasn't lived up to the hype.
Other than the teams you listed, I think GS and PHX would be good fits.
Barnes and Williams as your bench 3/4 is pretty enticing. And PHX is a homecoming of sorts and a good system for him.

Just another article on Derrick Williams
sounds like a deal is inimmment

quote:
He's not fast enough, explosive enough, or a good enough shooter to play the small forward position, and not big enough, strong enough, or a good enough rebounder to play power forward. There's talent there, but he's got to be in the right system for it.

GMs never seem to learn with these tweeners. If they're not big and strong enough to play PF but doesn't have much of a perimeter game/ability to sometimes handle the ball, don't freakin' draft them. I don't care how athletic they look.
