The way I understood it was everyone thought he was going to bama (could be wrong) so maybe they didn't pursue him as hard as they could have???

Well I'm just trying to figure out why a school like Alabama gets a pass when they miss on a kid to another school that is not the other major program in the state, but LSU doesnt get a pass on missing.

Who has given them a pass? A friend of mine who is a bammer was not happy that winston left the state.

I guess for me it's just a Les doesn't really let kids go out of state more than the next guy. I've always thought he's done really well in state. As good as Saban did when he was here. And has really only had one average/non top 10 recruiting class since he's been here.

Anywho, my bad for coming across as a jerk earlier. I just get fired up.

Question: What do you think are the 2 or 3 major changes that Les needs to make to catch up to Alabama and keep ahead of Auburn, Ole Miss and Texas A&M?

1. Consistent Discipline (on and off the field)

To me that is the biggest problem with LSU football for the past three years. If kids understand or expect to screw up with no repercussions then what prevents them from making it routine.

How come a running back fumbles and doesn't see the field for 3 quarters, but a qb throws a bad pick and stays in for the next series, or a defender absolutely gets lost in coverage and is thrown back out there. Back to back fumbles are as common as unicorns, but they are dealt the biggest blow.

Also Jeremy Hill sitting out entire quarters is baffling to many, he's the best player and gets lost somehow for a 3rd stringer? It doesn't add up far too often.

2. A return to fundamental tackling

This isn't just a problem at LSU, it's across college ball, but the bump tackle drives me crazy. Wrap up and drive your hips. Arm tackles are far to common on this years team, as is just a general lack of physicality. Out of position, poor angles and blown coverage has been rampant as well. If one kid was doing it, I'd blame the kid, but with so many players and at different positions (ie DB's and LB's) having problems, I think it goes back to coaching.

Just my thoughts

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I'm hoping you're on target, even though I hate to think Saban has to move or retire before LSU can catch Bama. It's just that seems like it's the reality we're facing.

So that being said, I think there are several things Coach Miles can do to step back from the abyss and bring LSU back to the center of football relevance.

1. Keep recruiting and repair that fence around Louisiana's talent.

2. Take a cold, hard look at his assistant coaching staff and evaluate the desired performance versus the reality. Make changes as needed. It's my feeling that OL and conditioning are two areas that need immediate help, along with LB. If that means shaking up the staff and moving some out, then do it. And sooner rather than later. Loyalty to staff members is not necessarily the same as loyalty to LSU. That may be hard for him. And likewise, look at non-performing or low-performing players and make adjustments as needed.

3. Today somebody raised a question about scheduling so many cupcakes and whether this is good for LSU, citing how much pressure LSU had in 2011 but how well LSU rose to the occasion and had a dominating season. A hard look at future scheduling might really help shape things for LSU's betterment.

4. It's been noticed that often when some play or someone is successful in a game or series of games, that someone or that play often disappears. Realizing that is partly anecdotal, it is also partly true. Wondering why? Should that be looked at more closely?

5. LSU has been criticized by many of us for "taking the foot off the pedal" and allowing opponents to hang around too long. As a result, many games that should be sure wins for LSU become close-scoring nail-biters for at least part of the game - most recent example is the halftime score for the LSU-Furman game. It has been happening this way so many seasons that it seems it's happening by design. If it is by design, that design need to go away. Permanently. LSU needs to keep the pressure up offensively and defensively for the entire game. I think it would also help morale, not to mention raise the excitement level for fans and be another incentive for those in the stadium to remain in the stadium for the whole game.

Have an average to above avg. Qb. Remember metts only been here for 2 years and look how a good qb opens up our offense. Look at what we did for 3 years on offense under jefferson/lee. Defensively we have to reload and not lose everyone to the NFL.. Good post chicken man

Dear Mr. Chicken,

Given the quoted statements:
quote:

Saban won't be there forever

quote:

that's a decline

Would you be willing to state, on the record, your admission of A/THE decline in the football program?

Also would you admit, in writing, that the LSU football's success is primarily contingent on nick saban leaving bama?

Your post smells of more explicit answers to these questions, but it seems you kind of tiptoed around it a bit.

The Rant's Admin can speak for themselves but . . .

A decline assumes some (arbitrary) point of reference and obviously some peak. Most recently 2011. Including the '11 CG, we've lost 3 in row to Bama, two by 21 pts, and we've lost (at least) 3 games the past two seasons. That's not only a decline but a significant one at that.

Not sure I agree. There are other coaches that could continue the run at Alabama if Saban leaves. There is a process now in place at Alabama. How often does the sunshine crowd remind us that Les is better than Saban (in terms of performance at LSU). Les has an ego that seems to ruin the chemistry of his football teams. Once people started giving Cameron credit for the offense the changed as it changed in the 2011. A little ego never hurt anyone but if Les wants respect from the media he needs to change the goofy persona.

- Dominating OL and DL - where's the beef?

- Aggressive Shut Down Defense

- Nail the Recruiting Fence back around Louisiana

How do you know what input, whether positive or negative Les had on the offensive play calling? Just curious.

My biggest take from this season thus far is that we are getting our asses kicked in the trenches. No matter who we play or OL and DL are getting pushed around all over the field. I believe if any changes should be made it needs to to start there.

I agree with this.

It will end as all runs must end, maybe with the help of the NCAA. But LSU's run may also end.

We can't do a damn thing about how they run their program, pay their players, make our schedule etc. All we can control is our program.

We need better in game coaching and clock decisions.

Better Character players, not 4 star quitters.

Better oline coach.

and Better overall discipline.

In the 1995 season, after Nebraska blew out undefeated Florida, 62-24 in the Fiesta Bowl to win their second straight title, I remember thinking that Nebraska had this dominant program that would never be dethroned. Two years later, he retired, and Nebraska's program has been on a roller coaster ever since

To be fair here. That is when it was time to stop running the option Osborne ran and start recruiting O-lineman that could pass block as well. The game was changing and Nebraska HAD to get on board. Just sayin.

Texas would be his last job. BUT if he stays at Bama, it would be for another three to 4 years and then settle in on the porch with a beer near his dads filling station in West Virgina.

For those hating on anyone criticizing Chavis and the defensive coaches, answer me these questions.

Despite losing a ton of players, how is it that these other guys have not improved throughout this season? I am not talking about being outplayed by better opponents, but looking confused on nearly every other play 10 games into the season.

Name on linebacker recruit that Chavis has brought in that has improved greatly other than Minter? Kwon is not an answer, because while he's had flashes, he's actually regressed as the season has gone on.

How many DBs have to regress for Raymond to get any criticism? The following DBs regressed under his coaching:

Reid, Simon, Collins, Mills, Loston, and many others.

Our best DBs the past two years have been true freshman and the best one from last year dropped off a cliff this season. There is a major issue there.

There's no evidence to suggest Saban is considering a leap to Texas, other than unsupported rumor and a statement by his agent, which was intended to extort more cash out of Alabama. There's also nothing to suggest he'll be retiring soon. Based on what? Saban is 62 and on cruise control. I can see him being there 5-8 more yrs.

As someone posted, LSU's success shouldn't be gauged on who is or isn't coaching Alabama.

That does nothing to ease my feelings of dread over the next two games. LSU has in the past quit after the a Bama loss.

Yes. People love to excuse the lack of talent he's had to work with at DB, but the fall off in DB play wasn't just due to the loss of TM7.

Raymond's history as a DB coach isn't even that great. He had 1 year at Nebraska and people want to claim he is the reason for Dennard somehow getting drafted when the kid was playing like a stud in the year before Raymond got there.

In the end, the development or lack there of over the last two seasons can't just be blamed on talent when talented guys from 2011 defense struggled under his coaching the next year.
