I think the SEC would have been better off taking two of the following: Virginia Tech, NC State, Florida State, Miami, and Maryland

West Virginia was in a dying Big East and was passed over by the ACC and the SEC. The school didn’t want to get caught without a chair when the music stopped so it jumped. There’s nothing wrong with that. But eventually the distance between Morgantown and its neighbors will become an issue that cannot be overcome.

Just so this is out there, the Big 12 has really tired to help us out with travel. Especially with basketball and sports like that. I cant remember the specifics on how but they have tried at least.

I know they've tried, but I wasn't sure how successful those efforts have been.

As a WVU fan, do you think your Mountaineers are in a viable long-term situation with the big12? Not flaming, just curious--I don't know any WVU alums/fans IRL.

We dont really know either, yet. They focused on sports like basketball primarily, so we will see how it goes this season before we really know. IIRC they didnt give us as many 9pm start times this year and spread out our away games to where we wouldnt fly in and back out to a game within a day or so.. something like that.

As for the Big 12, I like it, most of our fans do, if nothing else they like it because the Big 12 offered us a spot in a conference when no one else did. I think we will be OK in it long term honestly. But I will say, even though we do like the Big 12, we have some fans who would rather be in the ACC or SEC. I think a lot of our fans miss being able to drive to road games and stuff like that.

Meh! I think this speaks to Aggie insecurities than it does about the big 12. Michigan State, Oklahoma State, Arizona State, and Kansas State don't need to have their sister schools look out for them.

I can never see a scenario where Oklahoma State and Michigan State leave their conferences because they feel they are treated badly by OU and UM. TAMU belongs in a Texas based conference with Texas. That's just the way it is. The SEC did not need Aggie.

Mizzou is a double Meh! for the SEC. I mean it's a good school but another Florida school would have been better. It would have locked up the the third biggest state in the country.

I think eventually Texas A&M will fade in the State of Texas and in the SEC. People in Texas who aren't aggies will care more about Texas, Texas Tech, TCU, Baylor and Oklahoma and Oklahoma State over TAMU. TAMU can't be successful as an SEC outlier in the State of Texas.

The Bleast became a coach farm. Kelly, Jones, Petrino, Graham, Rod, Edsal. Outside of UL-who were just getting their feet back under them with Strong, WVU was the only program carrying water nationally in football.

Writing was on the wall and they had to move. ACC was the logical destination, but not much about the current system is logical to me. OL jimmied them into the BXII, staving off KY Senators and God knows what else in the process.

In actual miles WV isn't much worse off than before. Travel to Cuse, Uconn & USF was substantial, but I get the gripe from the westward schools-who all lose an hour en route. The move, other than financially never made sense to me.

I'll still take losing to Oklahoma over UConn though.

Probably, but I don't care. It was what it was. The SEC move was absolutely the correct call for us.

I would like to see VA Tech in the Big 12. It would be a nearby school for WVU, but mostly I would love for that rivalry to come back. It's another rivalry that dates back to the Civil War.

fricking this. Given our propensity for shitting the bed on Saturdays the last 18 months, I can now definitively say being around .500 in a decent conference is better than struggling to win a shite-ball conference filled with teams 5 years removed from mid-major status and basketball schools. frick the big fish in the small pond attitude that some of our fanbase has.

I like the B12, even with the travel issues (and yes, it is a problem). But in most people's minds the only other option was the ACC, and that was never actually an option for us. The tobacco road mafia was never going to let us in because our US News & World Report ranking wasn't high enough for them. Pretty funny that when push came to shove they jumped on basketball power Louisville, whose academics are, at best, marginally better (and that's a fricking stretch) than ours.

In defense of A&M weren't most all of the Big 12 teams like Nebraska, Colorado & OU/OSU frustrated with UT?

OU/OSU were seriously considering the Pac- 12 .

The Big 12 and WVU both acted a little out of desperation.

No fans wanted to see the old Big 12 breakup, including losing CU and Nebraska. As Texas fans we'd rather play those schools than TCU and WVU.. no offense to the mountaineers or frogs, who have great programs of late. WVU is just not a natural rival to anyone in the big 12 and TCU doesn't bring anything to the table. Playing TCU has always been a no-win proposition and DFW is a Big 12 market with or without the frogs.

What should we do? WVU has better football and basketball programs than Missouri but they were picked because they had a bigger population.

They would've been a better fit overall cultural wise, especially in the B1G.

Not an AAU member and not smart enough academically, they were never getting an invite. I would have liked them to be invited, just stating facts though.

The hell does Baylor have to do with anything? TV markets were the drivers in who went where in the recent conference shifts. Everyone knows this. WV is a small state with no major TV markets of our own, hence why we were and will continue to be automatically at a disadvantage compared to others schools. Comparing us to a historically "non-relevant" Baylor doesn't make that any less true.

Now if you want to argue who has the "better" big-2 sports programs, have at it. In my opinion, if you count total history for both sports it's basically a push. You have more history in football (pre-1980), but we've been better the last 30 or so years, with strong runs in the 1980s, early 1990s, and the 2000s, while the 80s & 90s appear to have been a total wasteland for you (ironic that your only bowl win during a 20 year stretch from the early 80s to the early 00s was over us out in AZ). Basketball we are pretty damn even, all things considered (the only possible separating factors being Jerry West and our two Final Four appearances).

I think sports are more about the here and now, rather than what's happened the past 30 years.

Try that argument next time someone rips your program, "We won the NC in 1981, BOOM!"
