Mais Arepas in Central City - lunch review

In a nutshell: delicious.
I had heard about this place a bunch, but had never made the trip over for lunch. Decided to go today on a whim.
Started with the Empanadas, which were little cornmeal pies filled with shredded beef, sofrito and small potatoes. Side was a salsa verde-esque sauce.
Went with the Arepas sampler which had a shredded beef, pulled pork and chicken. All were great, but the beef was the best, followed by the pork.
There really wasn't anyone else in there, which is a shame (although the location isn't very good at all). Nonetheless, I will definitely be eating there again.

Looks great. Your phone takes gangster pics.
I had it for lunch yesterday. Got the Cerda arepas / Colombian-style pulled pork, ripe plantains, pickled onions, cotija cheese. Really really good. Add a little bit of one of their house made sauces and it's a great bite of food.
That one was $11 which is priced about right if not slightly high. For the size and the simplicity of some of their ingredients you'd think an arepas @ $9 would be fair. Some are $13 and $14 bucks which I think is a tad ridiculous.

Yeah, the prices were higher than expected. For the sampler and empanadas, I was out $22. But I was full and the taste of everything was on point.

I went a few weeks back...interesting things on the menu, including seafood fillings. But my arepa was tough. I had trouble cutting through the corn shell, and my particular selection was cheese overload. Best parts of the meal--roasted corn app and the ginger/limeade drink made with raw sugar.

WHAT? That is NUTS! Did that amount of food even fill you up?

Love Mais, but it isn't without it's flaws.
Did you eat it with a fork & knife?
They've always had issues with over saucing or filling the arepas. I think it's a really interesting spot. They could do some special non arepas once in a while. I would appreciate some authentic Columbian.
ETA: It's a little pricey too.

First time mine was a little lacking in substance / yesterday it was fricking PACKED with tons of meat, onions, cheese, plantains. Truly delicious. Was not hungry after.

Having a rotating special arepas would be a cool idea, but it's not like Baie Rouge where they have like 3 sandwiches to choose from. Mais has a fairly large menu for what they're doing.

I could walk there from work. How come no one invites me?

May have overstated that. The first few times were issues, but lately they have been on their game.

You know me, close shop on Sunday and do a special all Columbian menu. Authentico'

That looks boss.
I'm partial to the one with chorizo and shrimp. It's not always on the menu.
