Having a chance to win doesn't mean anything. It's like Alleva saying it's not about winning championships, it's about competing for (i.e. almost winning) them.

Don't know if there's any truth to it, but REALLY old-timers used to tell me the Bahr would tell kids from LA to go anywhere else but LSU.
I think he knew deep down that if the sleeping giant ever woke up, it would cause more trouble for Bammer that most any other school.
Legend has it that Bahr told Ferguson that since Bammer couldn't take him, he would be best to go to UArk.

Didn't read all 9 pages but Mac wasn't that great against OM, either. I believe he beat OM and Bama the same year once or twice. That's what I remember my old man bitching about when he talked about Coach Mac.

Yep, just once, in 1970. He went 1-6-1 against Ole Miss and 1-5 vs. Alabama through 1969, including posting LSU's worst-ever defeat at the hands of the Rebels, 37-3 in 1963.
In the 1970s, he turned it around against the Rebs, going 8-2, but went 0-9 vs. Alabama after beating them in 1970.

I was in school 64-68 and 72-73 I had a 4 year detour in SEA but Cholly couldn't beat Bama, neither could anyone else. But the big deal as I remember was that he refused to get rid of Charley Peavy, the Offenseive Coordinator. Cholly was loyal to his assts but Peavy was a 3 yds and a cloud of dust type and back then the Veer and the I formation were the new things and we didn't adjust. Cholly Mac was a great coach and a great guy.

And let's remember a season then was 10 games only. There was no SEC championship game. And maybe a bowl would stretch it to eleven games. But many, many fewer bowls back then, too. So a post-season bowl was not a "given" for most teams, esp. not for those who are what we call "bowl eligible" today. Out of curiosity, I'm wondering if the average you took of Mac's 7.6 wins per season includes wins in bowls LSU played in back then, or is it for regular season games only?

I can remember my father bitching as far back as the Arky Cotton Bowl days. The '68 Sugar bowl had the ole man on the verge of a stroke/heart attack during the broadcast. That occurred three weeks later and again six months later. He didn't have a mechanism for just relaxing and getting over life.

Nuts.. This thread jumped the shark when your Miles obsession bled into it. Stop trying to bitch about Miles every opportunity you get. This thread was great till you (and your brethren) started the Miles angle.

Actually, Mac went through a five year streak of winning nine a season - late 60's to early 70's.
