When it finally happened we certainly traded up: Mike Archer, Garry DiNardo, Curly Hallmann. Sometimes we get what we deserve. I, for one, regret being so critical of Coach McLendon - a winner and fine man. Sound familiar?

Sounds like the rationale of someone with low self-esteem who believes that they don't deserve much.

losing both Tommy Wilcox to Alabama and John Fourcade to Ole Miss in '78 was the precursor to his dismissal.

Fourcade didn't matter. He was irrelevant and the war had already been lost by then.

Wilcox was the end. When it became apparent that Bryant could walk into Louisiana and take the best players from right under Mac's nose, there was no way Mac could ever compete. And, predictably, he never did again.

It's much like the current situation with Saban walking into Louisiana and taking the top players for the last couple of years and winning NCs while Miles trips over himself. Like Mac, he's lost any chance of competing with Alabama, and we are headed for another dozen or so years with a coach we can't fire who will never compete with Alabama.

It's our own fault. They don't give a shite who they fire or what they look like when they do. For them, it's win the fricking national championship or get the frick out. For us, it's (officially now)..."not about winning championships", it's about almost winning them.

There's one statistical outlier (1/9).

That's a pretty important statistical outlier. I don't care how close the games are between the two teams. In the biggest game, we were blown out. Miles record of 3-4 also includes wins when Alabama was in the process of rebuilding. Is Miles 2-3 or 1-4 in the last 5? If it's 1-4, being 3-4 overall isn't looking as good.

What remains to be seen is if Les will succumb to Bama as did Mac in the 70's. If so, I would be in favor of replacing Les because I think we can do better.

Well, despite losing his last two games to Saban, Miles still has a better record against Saban's Tide teams than any other coach in the entire country. LSU would have to take a big gamble by getting rid of Miles and going with some other coach who is unproven against Saban. The question is who else can do better than Miles has? Before this season some people suggested Brady Hoke or Brian Kelly as up-and-coming coaches who were primed to win big on the college stage...and we all saw what Saban did to both of them this year...

One of the things I find interesting when I read TD, and I don't as much as I used to because the threads track the same way, is that no matter how the topic starts off they always seems to hit a plateau at comment five. Invariably the thread becomes hijacked to "let's get rid of Miles." As for full disclosure, I am a Miles supporter based up on "my perceived" assessment of his results. Having said that, I do find falut with his play-calling and strategies sometimes; however, we have more to show for performance than we have in a long time. Sometimes good coaches lose, and sometimes bad coaches win.

Now if I have to make a prediction, I will assume that within a few minutes, hours, or days, there will be an outpouring of how I am an idiot who knows more about Mars than I do about LSU football. I should know that Miles is (insert your favorite insult), and I am equally stupid. I always come back to this. Who would you get as a coach, and why would they come here? After seeing Miles records and the abuse he endures from his LSU fanbase, why would someone want to put up with that for the long run?

As I remember it, Mac recruited Wilcox as a safety, and he wanted to play qb. Bear "promised" Wilcox that he would play qb, and then promptly moved him to safety. Another La recruit that the Bear got was Steve Mott, a center. Both Mott and Wicox were All- Americans.

It seemed that we would always lose a few blue chippers to Bama, Tulane, Arkansas, TAMU, and Ole Miss. Just enough to keep us as runner-ups.

Mac could field some bad-arse defenses.

When he was tied by Rice, 6-6, in the 2nd game of his first season as head coach.

After 1969-70, the seat was always warm. But it got a lot hotter in 1975 when we had a losing season. What was really his downfall was Charlie Peavy's offensive play calling (sound familiar?) during the 1970s--Alexander left, Alexander right, punt.....

Mac's refusal to can Peavy was the last straw (history repeating itself?), and Dietzel got rid of him after the 1979 season.

As to the two QB system, I do not remember when Mac didn't have a two QB system, other than the last year that Pat Lyons played.
Remember a few of the early QB duos?
Billy Ezell/Pat Screen
Screen/Nelson Stokley
Stokley/Freddie Haynes -->(a catastrophe at QB)

Another log on the "Mac Pack" fire was when LSU AD Jim Corbett died. As I remember it, Corbett was a staunch Mac ally with the powers that be at LSU and his demise was a big political loss for Cholly. As well as a disheartening loss of a close friend.

Speaking of the press. Bud Monte(t?) was the GG of that era. Except way more influential. When he started to go against Mac, the end was near.

it doesn't matter who the coach is, the fanbase will still be critical. Half the fanbase wanted to run Saban off in 2004.

One thing this thread brings to mind...

Those of us that were around for (most of) the Cholly Mac days should never let those who weren't forget how the last decade has truly been the golden era of LSU football.

Once upon a time, my mindset going into big games was was "I sure hope the Tigahs can keep it close".

The expectation of winning big games is much preferred vs. the hope of not getting blown out.

when the run of 9 win seasons ended

Mac, like with many good coaches, couldn't keep up with the expectations he generated with all those 9 win seasons in a row.

The man went from a 5 yr record of 45-12 straight to a 6 yr record of 40-27.

There were other issues for sure, but that was the main one. imo

The back to back non-winning seasons of 74 and 75 put Mac squarely on the hot seat.

The rant would have fired Dietzel after the 1960 season.

The Rant, with all due respect, is a place many come to express their frustration/displeasure of the most successful period in LSU football history rather than show their appreciation of the most successful period in LSU football history....go figure.

Guess we all come here from different reference points and with different expectations for LSU.

Me...I'm just glad to have been around to witness some of the greatest talent/coaching in LSU history produce the greatest results in LSU history.

I sat near a guy at the Ole Miss game last year who bitched constantly about Miles this, Miles that, "I told you so," etc. When we finally won, I looked back to gauge his reaction. He had a sour look on his face like he'd rather we lost so his opinions would be confirmed.

I have no doubt this guy posts on the Rant.
