You have no idea what you're talking about. I was a teammate of Tommy at Bonnabel and he never considered LSU at all. His Dad and our Coach, Willie Hof, were teammates at Tulane back when LSU was crushing them each year. The only Schools He considered were Bama and Ole Miss. Archie Manning was at our school all the time talking to Tommy, but when Bryant visited him, that was it.
Bryant told Tommy he could be an All-Sec QB or an All American Safety, that's why he switched positions after leaving Bama and coming home after his first semester. Bryant personally came to bring him back up there.
Peavy is what did Mac in. I remember people screaming " Quick Kick, Mac" on third down all the time at the games which I started going to in 73.

Bradshaw couldn't get in LSU, by his own admission. We got Bert Jones instead of Ferguson, so we were hardly hurting for QB's.

You're right. I'd forgotten about Bradshaw's academic record being so abysmal. Tech must have twisted themselves into knots justifying enrolling him there.
As to Ferguson, as you probably remember he was a much more prolific passing QB coming out of Woodlawn's pro-style than Bert Jones was running Hoss Garrett's wing-T but in truth Cholly Mack would have probably wasted his talents as he mostly did Jones' had Joe ended up in Baton Rouge..

The 1/9 game was obviously the biggest game between the two. It was also a rematch after the first biggest game ever between the two. And it is a statistical outlier.
The only win vs Bama that could be considered during rebuilding would have been '07.
Miles is 2-3 vs Saban in the last five games (wins in '10 & '11, losses in '09, 1/9, an '12).
Saban is obviously getting it done better than Miles at present but the gap isn't as great as sometimes thought. It remains to be seen if we're going to assume a prolonged status of 2nd place. IMO it's TBD (but we could know as early as two more seasons).

I don't know about y'all, but from 1969 to 1979 I can remember leaving tiger stadium at least once or twice a year with my dad threatening to beat Cholly's brains in.
It was really bad in 1974 when we thought we were going all the way only to fail again.
My dad's gone now but I can still remember him jumping up and down in the living room one afternoon hollering yes finally he's gone. We thought he had lost his mind. He finally calmed down enough to tell us Cholly had been forced to retire.
So what we are seeing right now looks like an echo from the 70's.
And this is definitely the best thread I've seen in years.

And Chicken, Charlie didn't average 9 wins a season, because we only played 10, later 11 at the time. I do remember calling a radio station to ask the question, "why do you want to get rid of a coach that wins 77% of his games?" I guess I was an unrelenting PosiTiger even in my teens.
I know you barely post-pubescent fans hate hearing this, but following the firing of Mac, LSU went thru 21 years of roller coaster football, with the nadir being The Curly Debacle.
I told this same story to TAMU fans when they wanted to fire RC. Now they are emerging from a 10-year roller coaster ride. You are fools if you think this can't happen to LSU again. Be careful what you wish for......

Actually the BOS gave Mac the option of longer contract if he fired certain assistants or two years, be the president of the American Football Coaches Association and them retire. The options were brought to him while he awaited outside in his car. When given the options, out of loyalty to his assistants, he told the messenger to tell the board that he would take the two year deal. He was hoping that his last recruiting class would pan out andet him keep his job beyond the two years It didn't work. Carl Maddox, a Mac supporter, had retired as AD. He was former Jim Corbett's successor. The BOS had
specifically hired Paul Dietzel to fire him, and would fire him
only a few years later. They then hired Bob Bordbead to can
Jerry Stovall. The biggest problem with LSU football at that time was the meddling by the BOS, including some women who didn't even have a clue in hell what a football was. It was a novelty to them.

Mac stayed on the hot seat because as some of u have said on this rant, he would never play the best QB. Any one remember JJ year before last against Bama in the mulligan?

Terry Bradshaw, believe or not couldn't get in LSU. La Tech said they'd take care of him academically and they did. Ferguson was NEVER going anywhere else but Arkansas.

The bottom didn't fall out until 1989, when Archer managed to run the program into the ground in only his third year. It's kind of silly to attribute that to firing a coach 10 years earlier, who no doubt would have long retired before then even if he hadn't been fired.
