Lots of players have been worth a damn and lots of trades and free agents have been worth a damn, it's not mickey's responsibility to develop and make sure talent is used appropriately.

I think Payton has the final say on all offensive moves in the draft, but i would think Loomis and the scouts give most input on the defense.

So what exactly is wrong with Loomis being a cap artist?

because there are GMs that do both? Wouldnt you rather someone that evaluates talent and can work the cap?

I love the posters blaming Loomis more than Payton for the bad defense
He's been the GM for over 10 years, now he's got a 5 year extension. Possibly 15+ years on the job? Really? Who gets 15 years on ANY job, much less an NFL gm?

And with a shitty defense almost every year since he took over in 2002?

Even if we dismiss his bad pre-Payton years and concede that Payton has picked all of his players and Loomis is just a bean counter, why the F are we in cap hell?

Why did we spend $30 million dollars more than any team in the NFL this year to go 7-9 and trot out the worst defense in the history of the league?

Its hard to develop bad talent.

defensive players drafted under Loomis

2002

Charles Grant 1st gave us some good years
James Allen 3rd- bust
Keyou Craver-4th bust
Mel Mitchell- 5th bust
Derrius Gilmore 7th- bust

2003

Jonathan Sullivan-worst pick in Saints history
Cie Grant- 3rd worthless
Melvin Williams -5th did he even make the team?

2004

Will Smith- gave us some good years.
Courtney Watson- 2nd RD huge bust
Rodney Leslie- 5th RD worthless
Colby Bockwoldt- 7th good ST player

2005

Josh BUllucks- 2nd horrible player
Alfred Fincher- 3rd RD horrible player
Jason Jefferson 6th rd dont think made team
Jimmy Verndon-7th didnt make team

2006

Roman Harper- 2nd league average safety, decent pick
Rob Ninkovich-5th good player now
josh LAy 6th didnt make team i believe

2007

Usama Young- 3rd garbage
David Jones -5th garbage
Marvin Mitchell 7th- really good value for what he was

2008

Sed Ellis-1st serviceable, but not what you want out of a top 10 pick
Tracy Porter 2nd- prob 2nd best DEF pick in his era. Injury prone though
Demarrio Pressley- 5th hyped, no production

2009

Malcon Jenkins-1st serviceable, didnt live up to 14th pick status
Chip Vaughn 4th- worthless
STanley Arnoux 4th worthless

2010

Patrick RObinson- 1st serviceable NFL player
Al Woods 4th didnt even make team

ill reserve judgement on 11'& 12' draft classes

but this is why our defense is so bad.

You bust on top 10 picks like Ellis & Sullivan. You only get serviceable player at 14 overall with Jenkins. ANd the biggest reason of all, the guys in the mid rounds that we have drafted under Loomis have all been worthless. These guys are instrumental to building team depth & occasionally hitting on a pro bowl type player.

Not only did these guys not turn into that, MANY of them couldn't even make the team. Think about that. And you want me to give him a break? No thanks. I didnt like him Pre Payton, and i dont like him now. He cant evaluate talent for shite.

On offense Payton and Brees can mask anything. That is why we have so many late round picks thrive. They'd be garbage on most other teams.

Why is Loomis making personnel calls. I thought he was a glorified accountant.

I'm not going to sit here and bitch about his pre Payton drafts. If you want to call it a learning curve that's fine. We've acquired many good players and some bad ones too. We've had soon to be 4 d coordinators under Payton. Mickey needs stability in coaching and to develop that talent. I'm sure Mickey uses the entire organizational structure for both offense and defense. He gets no praise for offense and all blame on D? That's lame.

Antonio Pittman didn't make team, fire Payton now!

Loomis and the scouts probably have a lot of say when it comes to compiling the teams draft board, but their still getting input about the type of players they're looking for from the coaching staff. This isn't to say they don't share in the responsibility, but how is it that we've hit a lot more on our offensive picks? I think it has more to do with a competent offensive staff who knows exactly the type of players they need. Hell, Spags only had one year, but it looks like two of his picks, Hicks and White, have a real future with the team.

He is also the one that brought in Hawthorne, Lofton, Sharper, Vilma, Fujita, Bunkley, S. Rogers, and A. Franklin. Not all guys produced alot, but were considered top at their positions prior to coming here.

Ok, fine. He's out. Please report to Airline drive tomorrow. We're gonna need you to restructure some contracts, trim some fat off the roster to get under the cap, sign a couple of free agents all the while keeping the next 2-4 years in mind. K THANX!

You realize Loomis isn't the one picking the players, right? He's the one making the numbers work. And he's damn good at it.

Exactly, he deals way more with going after free agents than draft picks. Oh, and doing math stuff.
