You realize Loomis isn't the one picking the players, right? He's the one making the numbers work. And he's damn good at it.

can anyone defend our defensive draft picks under him?

or just want to keep deflecting it?

is he even a good salary cap guy? Why is our defense so bad? Where is the money alloted besides Will Smith and Harper making 80Mil between them?

thank you!

he just gets that label so the organization is able to glorify him for something he "does".

fact of the matter is, most GMs are well versed in working the cap, which is why they are GMs in the 1st place.

Saints were 36-12 in the 3 seasons preceding this one + 4 playoff wins + SB win. If Payton was totally carrying Loomis in that time, I doubt that he'd try to include a clause in his contract that gave him an out if Loomis got fired.

I believe the poster you were replying to meant he doesnt pick players in the draft. Your link had nothing to do with draft. And yes, according to your link, Brees is well paid.

$30 million. YES $30 MILLION DOLLARS more salary than any other team in the league last year.

Almost $20 million over the cap is where our bean counter has us. Debating whether or not we can afford to pay for our pro bowl protector of the franchise QB.

Roman Harper and Will Smith are getting fat checks though.

So he doesn't pick the players and he has us in cap hell every off season. Solid work if you can get it, I guess.

If the blame falls under the coaching and scouting staff, would it make a difference to you? I'm thinking no.

Why is it on Loomis? Establish that first and then maybe we'll have something to talk about.

Here's an exercise: list the players drafted on defense under Loomis. How many have been worth a damn?

I think what he is alluding to is that Sean likes to keep drafting offensive players while the defense has continually sucked. There's been drafts where we were again the #1 offense in the NFL yet our priority was to keep getting offensive players.

I wouldn't doubt it.

Who wouldn't want a boss that let them do whatever the hell they wanted? That's the "relationship" that Payton always talks about between him and Loomis. He's not getting that anywhere else, unless they just name him coach and GM.

My main point though, is why our cap guy can't seem to spend money more wisely. You had a nice piece on our cap situation a few days ago. Unfortunately, we're in that spot every year.

Because we're trying to be competitive every year? Our history would most likely be a lot different if we took Tampa Bay's approach to cap management.

Because we pay our players good and keep them happy We seem to keep our good players around instead of letting them go in their prime like we used to, which starts to get pricey. Remember when Benson was cheap and we won 3-4 games a year? And have we truly been in cap space hell since Loomis got here or is this just been the last couple years?

We don't need to spend like the Yankees to be competitive, though. But if we do, we should at least be good at it.

If we're gonna spend $30 million more than any other team, is it unreasonable to expect the defense to at least be decent?

Payton should hire the better coordinator this time around

A lot more bitching in this thread than I expected. Loomis has been working magic keeping key FAs around lately. If he doesn't, he gets someone to replace them with great value.

Again, we were arguably the best team in the NFL between 2009-2011. The article you posted was from before this past season. Did you dislike Loomis then? Will you dislike him if we have a defense in the 15-20 range and go 12-4 next season?

And Payton is one of the 5 best coaches in football. If that's what he wants, then we should (and did) give it to him. We've been tight against the cap since after the uncapped year and he still finds ways to sign the likes of Lofton, Bunkley, and Hawthorne while extending Brees, Colston, Greer, Moore, etc...

We're in bad shape now but a few obvious moves (cutting Smith and Vilma) and we'll have breathing room. And as ugly as it looks, I thought we were going to have to let players like Moore, Colston, and Harper (bad signing) go and that we wouldn't stand a chance at landing Lofton, but he gets shite done.

our best offensive players have been diamonds in the rough. Poor argument. Colston, Moore, Thomas, Graham, our offensive line.

Brees and Payton make everyone on offense better.

We drafted plenty of defense players. Look at the list i just listed

Im not even blaming it on Loomis. No one really knows who is making what call, except that Sean Payton handles all the moves on offense.

My main point is: if he has no input he's not doing his job. And if he does have input, he's horrible at it.

Get a fricking GM that can evaluate talent. Thats way more important than counting beans.
