Here in Virginia, we are required to either check the deer at any VDGF authorized check station or call it in at a toll free number. Lots of deer up here never get checked in at all because of the toll free number. I used to hunt a lot in Alabama and they didn't even require you to check in a deer, at least on private land. Without checking in your deer, how do they monitor the deer harvest and deer population?

Have to validate tags online. Or tollfree or mail maybe.

if you purchase a license in MS, i think they call you after the season ends for a survey. at least they did one time. i don't usually buy a license because i rarely stray from family land

To me all this is stupid. The most efficient way to monitor deer harvest statewide is a tag system but even that has lots of flaws.

In LA and MS I have never been check by a GW for deer. Only fish or ducks.

Alabama has the highest deer to hunter ratio in the nation. We don't have the need to monitor the deer population like other states.

No reporting in MS. It's on the honor system.

Sheriff's office is another legal check station here. I can imagine there's been a few good old boys try to check in a deer or turkey on Sunday. They won't do that but one time!

It's only recently there are even tags in La. Growing up a person could kill 6 but no one knew if any given deer was your first, or sixth. Course back then few killed ANY.

Only place I've had to do that was Arkansas. Pain in the arse too. Finding enough cell service to make the call is the worst part.

I thought they changed it a couple of years ago where you could?

Yeah, it's a combination of things. Some of the reason for the Sunday ban goes way back to the old "blue laws" that were common in many states back then. Lots of church folks don't want to hear gunshots during church services, or so it has been reported. Game officials say it gives the deer or other game animals a chance to "rest" and not be disturbed. State legislature has had different bills proposed several times in my memory that would allow Sunday hunting but it's always been voted down. I think, but I'm not sure, that if you're fox hunting or coon hunting on Saturday night, you've got to quit at sunrise. Hafta look that one up again. I done forgot.

Funny how those aren't even in the Bible belt...

That's freaking ridiculous that they would allow such a regulation on themselves so arbitrarily.

We've been trying to get it changed for years. I believe it's now a county issue in WV.
