Actually, it was a 75lb doe/yearling. This is my first year to hunt and I have to admit I'm somewhat embarrassed for taking such a small doe. However, at the same time, I'm glad to have finally harvested one and gained some confidence. I didn't learn until later that you shouldn't shoot a single doe since you don't have another deer in the field to contrast sizes as well as to avoid shooting a button buck. Lastly, having my 9 year old in the stand screaming, "you got her daddy, you got her," was truly awesome. Merry Christmas.

Dude don't be embarrassed or ashamed or anything about that. You obviously had a great time and got to share it with your kid. You'll never forget that and making memories is what it's all about. Congratulations man and welcome to the most expensive and time consuming addiction you'll ever have

Congrats! Be proud and don't let her size be a negative. You accomplished a goal, got a kill and have room for improvement. Plus you created a memory you and your kid will remember for a long time.

Everyone whose shot more than they're fair share of deer have made that mistake. I have done it more than once and did it just last week. I felt bad at the time, but realized it wasn't the first and may not be the last time. Just be glad you got to share that memory with your child. My wife is due for our first child in June and I can't wait to start taking him to the woods!

Congrats brother! Never be ashamed of a kill taken ethically! If you enjoyed your hunt, and will enjoy the bounty of that hunt, you do not have anything to be ashamed of. In fact,be very proud, there are millions out there who wish they could enjoy a successful hunt such as yours.

p.s. Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Don't worry about the size, it's all meat in the freezer. Oh yeah and congrats!

FYI, you can distinguish bucks from does by their head shape. The area between the ears on a buck's head is flat, while that same area on a doe's head is more rounded. Helps when sexing small spikes and button bucks. I learned this valuable piece of info right after I killed my first deer.

Shittin me? That's the best eating in the woods and there is zero reason not to take it. It's not like it's a small buck and even then it's really just up to the area you're hunting.

Grats on your first kill!

Congrats. My first deer was a spike about 100 yards away when I was 11 years old. I was shaking like you wouldn't believe. You never forget your first.

No shame in that at all. My first deer was a yearling too. My cousin came and picked me up at my stand after I harvested it and I asked him to help me load it onto the four wheeler. He pushed me to the side, picked it up by himself like a bag of potatoes and off we went.
