With realignment seemingly heating up again how long before the NCAA moves to a 13 or even 14 game regular season?
If they do go to a longer regular season what affect will that have on the playoffs? Would it decrease the chance of moving from a 4-team to an 8-team post season?

A casual perusal of their message boards seems to show heavy support for joining a conference.
wait, what? just no. ~95% of ND fans want to maintain independence.

Where's that particular statistic from?
I figure that a majority of ND fans may want to be independent, but a 95-5 split seems like it comes from the Department Of Statistics Pulled Out Of My arse.

my lord. obviously the 95% was just a estimate.
point is: the overwhelming majority want to stay independent.

The B1G is trying to keep regional sanity.
this is a pretty unfair bash of the Big 12. We have whittled down to 5 major conferences, and it might further decrease to 4. Of the 4, three are solid: the North (Big Ten), the South (SEC), and the West (Pac-12). The fight is for the scraps, and the only way the Big 12 can survive is going outside of its footprint, as the three major conference have all shrunk the Big 12's footprint by stealing a team.
Really, all conferences make geographic sense save one, and that's the one that's been getting raided. How about we cut the Big 12 some slack?
And conference realignment did not end A&M-Texas. The fact that so many SEC schools are able to maintain an out of conference annual rivalry against an instate foe shows that this is just an excuse. The series ended to "punish" A&M, as the Ags offered to keep it going. It was childish picking up your ball and going home.

Report is that Illinois will go the Legends division and the two newbys will join the Leaders division.
BTW - I still hate the names and the fact that M*chigan is in the other division.

you couldn't be more wrong.
They would make more money in the Big 10 than they do with their NBC contract.
When ND joined ACC in all sports but FB, my thought was that ND must be generating more money FB-wise as an independent than they could in a conference. Is this not the case?
Then i thought of UT's deal with ESPN. UT was able to settle on a huge TV deal with ESPN while being a member institution of the Big12. Can ND not do that in the B1G?
my 1000th post btw

wrong. ND would make much more money if they joined the B1G.
I need to see some numbers to prove that. My take is that when you sum up the following (and I'm sure I'm missing a few variables):
- TV contracts (NBC vs BIG10 Network)
- CIC (or whatever the grant sharing program is called)
- Athletic department giving and general university/alumni giving
I'm thinking that Notre Dame has done the math and has said that it's more financially responsible to stay independent given the current college football climate. Call me naive but I tend to believe thar those adminstrators have done their due diligence. They didn't get where they are by being stupid.

So you admit you have no statistics on which to base your claim?

Not unless the B1G foregoes its requirement that all TV rights from each member is turned over to the conference. In the Big12, only Tier 1 and 2 are turned over to conference and Tier 3 is reserved to the members (which is the content shown on the LHN).
In other words, no.

what? staying independent for ND is about identity and tradition.
there are plenty of articles detailing why ND would make more money in the B1G. i figured everyone was well aware of this by now?

A year ago there was no GoR in the Big12 - I think it totally changes the landscape now in the Big12 (although as I posted a bit earlier, I can't explain it very well
It definitely stabilized the conference a bit, but then again we thought no way anyone would leave the ACC after the exit fee got bumped to $50 million.

I'm not an ND fan - but have good friends who are alumni and they have stated emphatically that the B1G being CIC schools would not be a place where ND, as a Catholic institution, would ever want to be. I believe them.
Yes - ND would make more money. And Yes - somethings are more important to ND.

And if ND were to start playing in the ACC or BIG10 as a conference member (read: regional games) and did not play the USC's of the world and then lost that identity and tradition, what then? Why is it so important to maintain that image with their fan base? It's because that image is associated with some $$ figure. They figure they don't have any brand appeal any more if they play in an exclusive conference.
