staying independent for ND is about identity and tradition.

at least we agree on one thing.

and this whole side topic got started by me saying that tradition holds back progress, and I think ND staying independent is one of many examples of this

Why is it so important to maintain that image with their fan base? It's because that image is associated with some $$ figure

NDs endowment is worth 7.5 billion, they are not hurting for money.

sometimes status, prestige, tradition, and identity are worth more than making a couple extra million per year on a tv contract.

i can agree, but i look at it from different angle; i think more teams should go independent in football and get rid of these archaic conference affiliations.

Rutgers, barring a last-second change.

They're scheduled to vote on the matter as soon as tomorrow.

And this is why I still think the Big 12 is the most susceptible to a full-blown collapse, even after this Maryland move.

Being independent in football generally locks you out of most major conferences for your non-football sports.

No argument there. That's exactly what I am trying to say.

Somewhere, someone has done the math and has said that Notre Dame's reputation and image are more important (read: valuable in terms of money) than a bigger TV contract.

yea, and in the 90's, the Big-10 and Pac-10 thought there was more value in the Rose Bowl than in a national championship game.

They changed their mind.

Ok, so even if I buy the Notre Dame argument...how is it detrimental to college football? How is that affecting anyone else? From the perspective of the teams they play, it's just another OOC game.

For the most part, I don't see how tradition is holding back much.

Special rules created for one team aren't detrimental?

If Boise State becomes independent, will they be offered the same deal as Notre Dame in the BCS rules?

What about the other independent teams? Why aren't they treated the same?

And I know your answer is just going to be some variation on "tradition" or "history," and I think that's absolutely ridiculous. I don't give a shite what Knute Rockne did all those years ago.

It's the same buttshit that got Alabama into the BCS NCG last year over Oklahoma State, despite OSU having a much better resume.

"Tradition" and "history" or whatever else you want to call it are detrimental to the sport.

We still don't have a playoff. I think that's an example of tradition holding back the progress of major CFB.

Exactly!

And even when the playoff does come in 2013 or 2014 (I can't remember), it's still not going to be an NCAA championship. That's ridiculous.

but they kinda are.... any team who finishes in the top 2 plays for the title.

in 2 years, with the new deal, if you finish in the top 4 you make the playoff.

Boise does not have access, in most years, because their schedule is awful but that is largely because of teams being delegated to 8-9 conference games per year.

We're referring to what is informally known as "the Notre Dame rule", which means an automatic BCS bid to the school if they finish in the top 8.

I don't think of the power conferences want it to be a NCAA championship, with the NCAA out of the picture they control the process and most importantly the $$$$.

you're probably right on that. as a fan, though, I'd prefer to see it as a sanctioned championship.
