I'll take spoonies over mallards, pintails any day. If they're fat, they're good. If they're skinny and red, toss 'em. I've seen FEW that are red and skinny.

Hunted rice fields this weekend. We let them fly, but we let a youngster kill one off the water for his first duck. I won't be eating it.

Out of 30 birds we got this weekend, I had three with breast worms or whatever you call em All 3 of the ones that had it were spoons, there were only about 7 spoons out of the 30 I've seen it in other species, just felt like mentioning it FWIW, I know people will eat the ones with the parasite, but I toss those

My dad made me wait until I could shoot a duck in the air before I bagged my first one. He also waited for a good duck, in my case a pintail drake, before allowing me to take a shot. I didn't understand it then but I do now. That youngster was probably fired up about his first kill and rightfully so but that's something you never forget and if I'm doing the shot calling a first duck will never be a spoony on the water.

There's plenty of other ducks I'd rather shoot, but if I didn't have that opportunity, I guess I'd take some spoonies. The fact that they're a PITA to clean is more motivation to pass than the way they taste...

Some spoonies will get into the saltwater marshes and eat there. If they do the meat will be reddish and taste like fish. Otherwise the meat is white and just like another duck. BTW I let them go.Rice field or marsh.

in the 3 duck days.. i could count on one hand the number of spoons we took... but just like dos gris.. when it's slow....boom... or in a crowded blind... heck I have had guys from up north with me that WANTED spoons and blue bills.. cuz all they killed was mallards..(dakotans)... FWIW... one of the most memorable retrieves any of my dogs have made was on a spoon.... and that one is in fact on the wall. talking to some folks that didn't shoot but 2 or 3 times last weekend spoons would have been welcomed..
