Some more Coach Royal sage advice...

"Sometimes you have to suck it up and call a number."

"He's not very fast, but maybe Elizabeth Taylor can't sing."

"I try not to make the same mistakes today that I made yesterday."

"I never have planned a whole lot of future. It's one day at a time."

"I didn't want to stay until I had used up all the enjoyment because that's too long to stay anywhere."

"Football doesn't build character. It eliminates the weak ones."

"Breaks balance out. The sun don't shine on the same ol' dog's rear end every day."

"I had hoped God would be neutral."
(believe this was said in reaction to an anti-UT sign at an Arkansas church).

"All the white meat is gone. There's nothin' but necks on the platter."

"You've got to think lucky. If you fall into a mudhole, check your back pocket - you might have caught a fish."

Former Texas Coach Darrell Royal Dies At 88
RIP.

I was surpirsed how young he was when he retired. He was not that much older than Bowden or Paterno. Any orangeblood types know why he hung it up so early?

Somebody probably already put this up, but it's a great tribute from Mack. R.I.P. Darrell.

Although Darrell is often given credit for coming up with the wishbone formation it was his O coordinator Emory Ballard who went on to become a HC @ A&M & Miss St who received the lions share of the credit for making the wishbone a viable offense.

Barry Switzer did a great job of incorporating it into the Sooners offensive philosophy.

Royal's daughter was killed in a bus accident in 1973. This incident caused him to reassess where he was in life and he admittedly was less aggressive as a coach at a time when college recruiting was becoming more aggressive. By 1976, he knew it was time to move on with life. Essentially, he decided to "stop and smell the roses" as it were. He lost a son in a motorcycle accident in the 1980's.
