if a player on your team helps another team's player up to his feet after a play do you applaud his sportsmanship or dislike the act as its a show of weakness and your guys is being too nice to the competition?

this comes from a conversation about differences sportsmanship in various sports

It's only a weakness if you don't quickly withdraw your hand when the opponent begins pulling himself up.

during a game not a chance, unless the player of the other team is hurt. after the game is the only time you are suposed to shake hands, during a game you are still opponents.

I like seeing it, because it usually means that player just laid the other one out.

Class and sportsmanship are dying attributes in sports. Helping up an opponent that that you just pancaked is class that the punk generation doesn't understand.

It's a waste of energy IMO, you're already helping your teammates up screw the other guys.

I remember one coach who instructed his defensive guys to immediately help up the opponents star running back. The coach wanted to minimize the little "rests" the runner was getting on the ground between plays.

Bear Bryant used to tell his players to help up the opponent they just knocked down and tell them to get used to it.

You can have a nice word for him like...nice play, or good hit or anything along them lines.

But don't help a opponent...why use your energy to help the opponent up. Let him use his own energy and strength to get up.

From the movie "the Bear"

"I want you look at your opponent, look him in the eye, then at the snap hit him, hit him hard, knock him to the ground, help him up and tell him you'll be right back"

I think this is how it should be.

It's definitely a nice display of sportsmanship to help an opponent to his feet, and I won't ever complain about it, but...

I agree with this. Most teams like to think they are going to wear the other team down as the game goes on. Every time the opponent has to get his tired arse up off the ground is going to make him use just a little more energy. Every time you help him, you're spending just a little more of your own. I wouldn't help an opponent-- not to be a dick-- but just as a matter of practical strategy.

Always the right move in my opinion. It says to the opponent "I am not threatened by you." It exudes class, and more importantly, confidence. Just like when I used to be the only guy who smiled in the team football picture. I never understood why guys wanted to look like they were fricking miserable. You're supposed to be having a good time.

Anyone who would have a problem with this is disturbed. It is unfortunate that sports is not just a game to some people. It's not war. It's not Thunder Dome. It's not the Roman Coliseum. It's a game.

I look at the other way. Accepting help is a sign of weakness. Most times a player won't accept help from the other team for that reason.

You help them up so you can knock their arse down again and so they don't have time to catch their breath.

It has nothing to do with "good sportsmanship." Or at least it didn't when I played.
