I am thinking of picking up a kayak for weekend trips to Gulf Shores/Destin. What's a good rig to start with and where's the best place to look for one?

Search kayak on this board for starters. Then go to paddling.net to pour over the reviews. All depends on how much you want to spend and what you are using it primarily for. Also, be prepared to become addicted to kayak fishing.

ETA: BPS. Ascend FS12T is what I also have. Great kayak for the money, especially for a first kayak. There are better out there as far as stability and storage, but it gets the job done for what I use it for.

Na. Just moved our shite out of Tuscaloosa yesterday. Which sucked arse. Headed to Tallahassee at the moment to see if we can get some business plans straightened out.

end.

To the OP I've got a BPS Ascend FS10 and love it.

If It's just for the beach, then look at Ocean Kayak. Wilderness systems tarpon series is great in the gulf, too. I have a couple. Also hobie kayaks with the mirage drive peddles work wonders out there. They also cost around 1799.

Indeed. Also he can get you into some sweet private ponds.

I have the Ascend 12ft too. Good rig, but probably not the best for the surf.

Check out the Native Manta Ray. It's an extemely versatile and comfortable boat. Great for inshore fishing and has some speed to it. Don't know where you are, but check out Massey's. They had some REALLY good prices recently.

I wish I hadn't. Now I want one. The 5 reds I caught this weekend were way more fun than the 100 or so trout.

How do you choose between sit in and sit on top?

More room for your gear in the SOT. Where you gonna put your poles, net, ice bag, tackle, PFD, etc in the SIK?

I don't like the sit-ins. If I flip, I'd rather just fall out rather than having to fight to flip back over. Also more room.

if you'll be fishing, you don't want a SIK
