Chancellor Martin has ended the Bengal Legacy Scholarship to children of Alumni who do not live in Louisiana (but pay in-state tuition at LSU). Guess what out of state Tiger Alums? All out of state children of Alums entering LSU after 2010 will have to pay out of state tuition.
NOOOOOOOO!
My wife and I have been banking on the fact we were only going to have to pay in-state tuition for our kids. I now officially hate Chancellor Martin.
On the bright side, I can convince my wife to move back. We've said over and over again, the only school they can go to without a scholarship is LSU. They can go anywhere they want with a full ride, but are limited to strictly LSU if they are too stupid to get a scholly.

It seems like a lot of people don't really care about what is happening at the university until it affects them. There are a lot of major issues that are going to stem from these cuts.
Dont worry it'll be affecting everyone soon. Elimination of programs, classes, faculty leaving. Class size will be larger, services available for students axed.
There is talk of raising the auxillary fee from 5% to 7% or 9%. The 3 to 5% hike earlier really put a hurting on athletics, cant imagine what this would do.

UT is almost twice the size of LSU and enjoys a ranking and reputation in the Top 50--size has nothing to do with it, standards do.
Wow, your lack of understanding how colleges work is amazing.
First off, UT has the 2nd largest endowment in the US only behind Harvard. That alone makes them an entirely different beast ($12.1 Billion to LSU's $555 Million). I'd sau a 24-fold higher endowment makes it pretty damn different.
Secondly, UT does have ~52,000 students. they have ~39,000 Undergrads and ~13,000 Grad students. That means their grad students make up 25% of their student body and are involved in research. That is what brings in money. So 25% of their students are bringing in money outside of tuition to their university unlike undergrads that are economically a net drain on the university while there.
LSU, on the other hand, has 26,000 students(much lower than the 32,000 when I was there 10 years ago), and of that 26,000 only 4,000 are graduate students or roughly 15%. Again, that is LSU's issue. They have too much money pumped into their undergrads and actually should continue to get smaller in the undergrad and larger in the grad student populations.
This cut in a useless scholarship that brings very little positive to the university, may help do that.

UT has enjoyed a unique financial source in the University owned minerals in Texas oil and gas fields that have been producing a significant amount of money for a long, long time. One might be hard pressed to find many other universities, if any, that have enjoyed such a fairly dependable source of income like that.

Thus my point. UT is a different beast and yet still has nearly double percentage-wise the graduate student enrollment within their total population.
Schools get into the top teir (top 50 or so schools) with graduate student work/research and not by having tons of undergrads.

However, with LSU's stance against the LSU researcher graduate student on a fellowship who was attacked by a gator. You can probably kiss goodbye many fellowship graduate students coming to LSU for their studies.

Up to almost 28,000 again last fall. Indications are that enrollment should be up this fall also. Mostly because they are admitted anyone with a pulse and a means to pay tuition.

Which brings up the point, if you are from out-of-state and you kid is smart enough to get in to better schools, why would you send them to LSU? Certainly whatever state you are in, other than mabe MS, there has to be better in-state schools that would be cheaper or at least on par.

simple solution, stop moving out of state, or if you have, move back in state.
Naive response. From my Engineering graduating class, I'll bet less than 30% are still in Louisiana, and the majority of those are Chemical or Petroleum Engineers. Not everyone wants to work in the Chem plants or off-shore. Louisiana has no high tech jobs and has little chance of attracting any. Guess there's always Bass Pro Shop or Walmart.

Dumbass, because it draws a significant number of the offspring of LSu grads who left the state thus keeping that family's connection to Louisiana, their families Alma mater and perhaps, no definitely, drawing kids from academic backgrounds beneficial to the school and Louisiana who otherwise would not come. Also, a percentage of those will connect with their roots in LA or find employment opportunities in the state by virtue of matriculating at LSU. Finally, they will serve as ambassadors for LSU to their friends and siblings around the country to areas where we are not as well known and/or get little respect like the Northeast, California, etc. Therefore chew on that and accept the fact you just said something retarded

As usual, DeeHorton is a moron.
LSUMafia has been DEAD BALLS ACCURATE with EVERYTHING he/she has posted in this thread.
Deal with it.

I'll definitely say LSUMafia made a much A much better argument as opposed to the name-calling that was going on.

We have twins, and if they decide they want to attend LSU...I see us getting an apartment there to set up residence...of course that will be in 16 years...
Posted on 8/27/10 at 11:41 am to FLtiggah
If you can afford an apartment to establish residence, you can probably afford tge out-of-state tuition.
Posted on 8/27/10 at 11:42 am to OFWHAP
but I can re-sell the apartment after 4-5 years...thanks for that insight.

So you left for work. Good for you. No one said don't or you are an arse for doing it. Fact is that you do not pay taxes to the state of Louisiana anymore. PERIOD. You are no longer a resident of the state, yet expect the state to give you a handout because you graduated from LSU.
What most of you choose to ignore is its this "family" mentality that has screwed the state of Louisiana on so many levels when it comes to state funding. LSU needs to do what is best for LSU. If there was so much "family" connection as you say, LSU alums would be giving more money to LSU rather than the TAF. Plain and simple.
Worst alumni donations in the entire SEC, yet highest or top of the ladder for donations to the athletic department. Got to love the priorties of Almuni.
Again, LSU is cutting budgets. This should've been cut way before now. There is no reason for it and other schools including the likes of Texas and UGA don't give that kind of break to out of state alumni.

TOPS needs to go and that money can be given to universities to use other ways
No sense in keeping tops with these kinds of cuts

I agree with most of your points, however, I saw this as more of an incentive on LSU's part to attract these potential students back to Louisiana, vs. an alum looking for a handout. LSU evidently believed there was a benefit in getting these students back...
My question still is, what is the net gain by cutting this program? How were these students' costs subsidized?
