I bet you give the guy at your job who puts the toys in the happy meal box a hard time, just because you got “promoted” to the drink station.

The women’s program lost millions before Mulkey's arrival too. Fact it is, women’s basketball at LSU is going to be a money pit. You can throw money away and lose or you can throw money away and win.

And? Every sport besides football and men’s hoops lost money.
Don't look at the gymnastics books if you don't like the color red!

Looks like accounting tricks designed to show a net loss.

Gotta pay for Mulkey’s outfits and Angel’s eyelashes

A top notch athletic program is a huge driver of college enrollment, especially out of state students.
From a financial perspective you could chalk that $4M loss as an enrollment expense and call it a day. It’s a nothing burger and easily worth its cost.

Last I checked, LSU baseball makes ~$1-2M. One of the very few baseball teams that turn a profit.

Check again. Lost about $60k last year (which is effectively breaking even).
We can save over $60K on the future budget by leaving the bullpens where they are.

Do we know if this loss included TAF funds?

I must not understand, it said the department lost 4 mil, how is the frick you money not calculated in that
Because the audit is part of the Athletic Department. It does not include TAF which is its own non-profit that is associated with the Athletic Department, but is not actually part of the Athletic Department.
Edit: Further down the report they note the TAF contributions.

It’s women’s basketball. In college it sucks money away from men’s sports same as the WNBA.

As you point out, it's women's basketball, it's never going to make money (by itself).
Let's say you pour money into your R&D department (which also doesn't run a profit). You won't let the VP of R&D have a say on what improvements to the facility that department works in?
And just looking at the banter comparing both men and women's basketball, you could say WBB is a form of R&D. WBB apparently puts out a pretty entertaining product, and is respected. There are discussions on how some of those things could be implemented at the Men's level.

There are some interesting notes in the full report:

The largest variance between budgeted to actuals were from the two programs that won National Championships.
Baseball had sales 25.18% higher than the budgeted amount and Women’s Basketball exceeded budgeted sales
by 17.33%. Also, football outpaced projections by $1.26 million, possibly due to the head coaching change and
several home opponents that were highly ranked at the time.

Who cares? Championships >>> fiat currency

Most men's sports lose $$$ as well. At LSU, only fball and MBB made money in 2023.
They don't list baseball separately in this audit so I am not sure based on this audit. You may have seen that info though.

Pretty great ROI for what the LSU brand got in national publicity.
I would support giving Coach Kim some more funds from Baseball and Men’s Basketball to get us over the hump vs South Carolina this season.
I think $2M more could get us a repeat and would be a fantastic foundation for a Dynasty!

No way the women's basketball team is losing money starting this year. Guarantee Kim Mulkey will be operating in the black as long as she is here.

I'll bet you $7.8m that is not the case.

Just wait until Bob Mann finds out the athletic department has no money to contribute back to the academic side of the university. What more can we do to make him unhappy? This is a catastrophe of seismic proportions.

This is no different than professional soccer for women wanting the same perks as the men. They don’t draw the same revenue so it isn’t equal no matter how you see it.
In response to the R&D comment it has been researched and developed for years. Still losing money even though they won a national championship. If it’s still a profit loser then what else do you think can be done to make it profitable?

The article says lsu operated on a net loss. If the courts make lsu pay players, how will lsu afford to pay them?
