The divisions are all the same size with about the same level of competitiveness

At least the NFL has automatic benefits for winning your division, no matter how shitty, unlike some other amateur setups

Weird considering Tampa absolutely destroyed the Bucs.

Also weird considering Houston destroyed Cleveland.

The better teams won.

that like saying in the upcoming college football playoff, the conference winners would be seeded above all other playoff teams...would that make sense to you?

Its 2 different models.

NFL relies soley on record and winning Div is rewarded. Its the same model for both conferences. Its always consitant every year.

CFB relies solely on arguably sometimes flawed rankings and then a committee who slots them based on human interference. Lots of subjective decisions

I agree but it’ll never happen. Winning the division is priority 1 for every team before season starts. Unless the change the schedule make up playing division foes twice will carry a home game.

I agree but as an Eagles fan the result would've been the same.

I mean if we are going down this route, not every team plays the same schedule, so it wouldn't inherently fair this way either.

The reward is home field. Wild card teams get the reward of being in the playoffs without winning their division.

90% disagree

10% part is if you don't have at least a. 500 record. If you aren't even average you shouldn't be in the playoffs, let alone host your first playoff game

Instead of booing TV sets last night, the fans would have booed the team directly.

Better team won.

Win your division

This is such an overly simplistic view of the situation. It’s borderline retarded to have a team go on a road to a team with 4+ less wins.

I fully think a division winner should get in, they shouldn’t get to automatically host.

In 1970 the playoffs were only division winners. In 78 they added the wildcard to make it 5 teams per conf vice 4.

Actually if memory serves correct, after the merger in ‘70, each conference had 3 division winners and 1 wild-card. Each conference had East, Central and West divisions.

In ‘78, you are right and they stated adding additional wild-card teams and of course with League expansion and additional teams over the ensuing years since then we now have the present day 4 division Conference structure and extra wildcard teams.

Teams should be rewarded for winning their division. It’s the first goal for every team. Of course they should host over wildcard teams.

Theoretically that would penalize teams who win more competitive divisions. It ain’t broke and doesn’t need fixing

I see your point, but then you have to do away with divisions completely. You have no more need for regional twice a year divisional opponents. Then it’s like the NBA and the NFL just seeds all NFC and AFC conference teams.

Tampa would have whipped Philly's arse in Philly last night so I don't think it matters.

I don't think a team that loses 5 of their last 6 deserves a home playoff game in the Wild Card round.

As far as the playoff format, I find it funny that people believe it makes sense for a division winner to host with a worse record, but last week, posters said the expanded CFP should have zero automatic qualifiers for conference champions.

Not all posters said that.

at the very least, divisions are used for scheduling and preserving rivalries...and giving the winner a ticket to the playoffs...
