Presales began this week and its off to a slow start. Comicbook films usually start fast so this must be concerning for Disney.

The Marvels’ Ends Box Office Run as Lowest-Grossing MCU Movie in History
quote:
After four weeks on the big screen, the comic book tentpole is running out of steam with $80 million in North America and $197 million globally. There would typically be optimism that attendance could rebound over the busy holiday season, but Disney apparently doesn’t expect that to be the case. The studio wrote on Sunday in a note to press, “With ‘The Marvels’ box office now winding down, we will stop weekend reporting of international/global grosses on this title.”

The outlook continues to look bleak for superhero pic The Marvels, which is falling off 78 percent to 80 percent in its second outing to rank as Marvel Studios’ worst second-weekend drop of all time, as well as the worst for any Hollywood superhero pic. Among Marvel Cinematic Universe titles, threequel Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania previously sported the worst drop of 69 percent.
The Marvels is expected to earn $9 million to $10 million for the weekend

Worldwide, THE MARVELS debuted with $110.3M--$47M domestic, $63.3M internationally.
China was the #1 market outside US/CAN with $11.7M

EXCLUSIVE, updated: Marvel Studios‘ sequel, The Marvels, has clocked around $6.5M in Thursday night previews we hear from sources. Disney called the night at $6.6M for showtimes that began at 3PM yesterday.

The Marvels
Disney / Marvel Studios
November 10, 2023
Opening Weekend Range: $50M-$75M
Domestic Total Range: $121M-$189M
PROS:
Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel was introduced in highly successful and timely fashion back in 2018 and 2019, as her character was teased at the end of Avengers: Infinity War in advance of her solo debut, which benefited from coming out less than two months before the massively anticipated Avengers: Endgame. Captain Marvel would garner a $153.4 million opening and go on to earn $426.8 million domestically.
CONS:
The Marvel Studios brand has hit several bumps in the road of late. Despite Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 generating strong legs last summer, its initial $118.4 million debut was seen as something of a low-end performance for a well-established and beloved sub-franchise. The franchise is, quite simply, miles away from the zeitgeist-capturing interest and enormous goodwill that for a time helped every film achieve automatic blockbuster status–like Captain Marvel did over four years ago.
Bearing out all of these concerns, initial pre-sales are alarmingly low for a Marvel Studios film. Trends are currently 69 percent behind the pace of Guardians Vol. 3, 72 percent behind Quantumania, and 42 percent behind Eternals.

That movie is going to flop. The first one was mediocre and people are just burnt out on Marvel - just a torrent of middling content that's all a set up for something else down the line. (I liked Ms. Marvel well enough because it was something different in terms of style.) That last Ant-Man movie and Secret Wars, I bailed out on that shite after 10 minutes.

Unless the movie is an absolute AAA banger why not just wait until it hits Disney+?

If they had stuck to the formula, they could still be pumping out billion dollar movies.
People are burnt out on what they are doing to marvel now, but it didn’t have to be that way.

Kind of nice to see the comic book movies hit a wall
They need to take a break for a while

The Marvel franchise is now headed in the same direction as Star Wars.
Two of the biggest entertainment IPs in the world and Disney is now tanking both of them. It's actually kind of impressive.

I read comics from the era of the black Captain Marvel but I think the average movie goer has no idea, or at least no affinity for, either of the new Marvel characters. Hard to believe this thing will do well. The trailer doesn't excite me either.
But hey, it wasn't made for me after all. I'm just a person who grew up collecting comics. All of the right people who didn't are the right people so they should go see it instead.

They should have put Marvel movies in the vault for a few years after Endgame. This would have built up excitement and demand. But no, Disney chose to oversaturate and pump out shitty move after shitty movie. And also put terrible TV series on Disney+.
Casual fans got confused with the overall direction and left. Hardcore fans got pissed at the changes to classic characters/modernizations/other bullshite and left. The general public is just bored with superheroes in general and no longer is interested in any of it.
Disney has run the franchise into the ground. To save it, they just need to stop. Wait several years and appetite for superheroes will return. Make a triumphant return with X-men and profit.
They wont wait though. They will whore this franchise out until nothing is left.
A long way from when Walt would put his classic films in the Vault and then rerelease them every 5 years or so.

At this point it would have been better to have just closed the story line with Endgame. Then 5-10 years down the line reboot the whole thing with a complete new storyline and casting of characters with little to no continuity.

Or, maybe not even then. This film has no chance. Larson is a good actress but she’s pissed too many people off. Nobody cares about Ms. Marvel and nobody knows who Monica Rambeau is or why she’s in this move. This film was ill conceived.

That movie is going to flop.
But I am still going to see it in theaters.
Ms Marvel was casual fun, and Rambeau has been solid so far.
I think this will be a fun couple hours. I like the contrast of the ultra cheery, bubbly Kamala to the wooden, serious Danvers.
I know some of you can't handle someone enjoying a thing you hate, but I am too old to give a frick. I watch what I want.

Pushing their version of Kamala into a film shows you that Disney is actively trying to frick this up.

the average movie goer didn't read a single Iron Man or Captain America or Hulk or Thor comic once in their life, and never heard of the Guardians of the Galaxy or Dr. Strange or Ant-Man or Loki or Black Panther or Vision or Wanda or Hawkeye or Black Widow.
It's up to the writers, and the actors to make us like the character.

I get what you are saying, but they did it to themselves. Plenty of people would flock to see a good superhero/comic book movie. But they all suck now. They had Disneyed the Marvel franchise and have lost their base. They pushed one way with their thought process and we pushed the other way with our money. It will take longer for them to get it back than it was for them to ruin it.

This is me. I have never read a comic book. I enjoyed these movies because they were fun, smart, and entertaining.

The actress nailed it.
Not sure what people disliked about her. She is wide-eyed and hopeful, cheerful to a fault, and has an adorable innocence that makes you want to pull for her.
It was casual fun for a broad audience, with only a couple of moments that could be considered "woke". . .and they were mild af. Seems like the "woke" stuff was jabs at Islam.
The story was light, as was the tone. All in all, a good origin story for the character.
