Same. I quit going 20 years ago unless it was a wedding or a funeral. I also find it difficult to discuss with my older parents who are pretty regimented about going to church, etc.

My guess has always been the Catholic belief of forgiveness. A priest confesses, repents, and is forgiven. If the process is the core belief of the church then the entire process gets tossed when you excommunicate a priest.

There is a simple solution to all of this: let the priests get married.
If marriage was allowed, you’d get a whole lot more normal people being priests. The way it is now, I’d bet 90% of priests are some kind of social outcast as youths and I’d bet at least 50% are homosexuals who were raised to be ashamed of their sexual identity.
Being gay is becoming less taboo in society so I’d imagine the amount of people becoming priests to hide their sexuality is lessening as well.
But you still mostly get weirdos as priests because what kind of normal person wants to abstain from sex their entire life?

The other part is that it's almost exclusively effeminate, homosexual priests involved in the scandals & they are being "investigated" by other effeminate homosexual priests & bishops.

The men (priests) who did these heinous and despicable things, and anyone who played any part in covering it up deserve to be punished. But they are just men (priests), The Catholic Church is MUCH bigger than any person or group of people. It is the Church Jesus Himself founded and has been a driver of more good on Earth than any other institution. The Church has endured MANY scandals in the past, will endure through these gross injustices, and will endure through future horrors and injustices. Just because men profess a faith, or hold a certain office, does not mean that are incapable of sin. It's abhorrent, and should be called so, but the Catholic Faith is the most beautiful faith and the One true faith, and will endure because the Holy Spirit and Christ are in the "Church" and at the head of The Church.
The devil is also ever present in the Church as well as running rampant in our world right now. We need, now more than ever, God's grace to fill our Church and to fill the hearts of the Faithful men and women who make up the Church. We need to remain prayerful.

I've been working inside the Church for a bit... a few thoughts
1) it's clearly an awful and regrettable situation that is likely bigger than anyone really knows.
2) years ago and perhaps still today, devout Catholic families would send their socially awkward or potentially gay children to seminary... this is a bit of an unspoken reality.
3) there are tons of processes and safeguards in place today that were not in place years ago.
4) the priests are human and as all humans, nobody is perfect. that's not an excuse, just an observation that they by and large have similar emotions and thoughts that the rest of us have.
5) it is perhaps a bit unnatural to ask men, especially in modern times, to give up so much for a life of sacrifice.
6) ergo, a lot of priests struggle w/ mental health.
If some of these realities negatively affect your faith, I get it.
For me it's the opposite - that we're all imperfect.
Granted, taking advantage of kids is among the worst things someone can do. It's heinous. I think it wears on the good people involved in the Church as well.
Just my two cents.

Thank you for sharing. I agree with a lot of your points. You mentioned being around the church a lot.
Have you ever met Aymond? And if so, what would you say to him today about all these recent allegations? What questions would you have for him about how things can improve going forward? Do you think he needs to go, and if not, what can he do better to gain the trust of Catholics on the fence with their faith?
I’m genuinely curious.
