While not a bad gift, this is a very generic selection. Single malt scotch can come with a variety of finishes and subtle flavors based on the re-used barrels they are finished in. For instance, used port wine or sherry casks, or commonly bourbon casks. While bourbon must be aged in new American oak barrels, Scotch has no such restrictions.

ETA: I like Glenmorangie sherry finish

Last summer, one of my sons was into TX. I don't drink the stuff so I can't vouch for it.

About $55

Wild Turkey Rare Breed is one of my favorite bourbons in the $40-60 range.

Lagavulin 16 is very highly rated and less than 200/bottle. Considering you didn’t want pappys I assume your price range is somewhere in that ballpark...

Lagavulin is very good, if you like peaty single malts. Even if you don't, a whisky snob would probably admit that it is a very well made whisky.

Brunnahabhain is another nice Islay that is not as smokey and has an interesting flavor. It goes for less and makes a nice gift. One of my faves.

Laphroaig is another good Islay. The standard 10-year is good, but he might like a cask strength. Takes a bit of water to tame it. Also less expensive than Lagavulin.

Eagle Rare is a good option that won't break the bank.
