Would not shock me. Mormon. Very successful coach with 2-star talent at Navy Big question would be whether BYU wants to put up with triple option.

That would be wild at BYU. He's due for a change.

BYU always manages to unearth some gem from a third world country that the Mormon missionaries met. First it was Ziggy Ansah, now it's the 400-pound lineman from Tonga who's on mission.

If BYU made a concerted effort to find talent on the Mormon mission circuit, they'd have a recruiting advantage that no other school could match.

I think he would win a consistent 8-9 games at BYU, but I don't think this would be the right call for BYU's long term name brand. This is the university of Ty Detmer, Jim McMahon, and Steve Young. BYU has always been able to consistently recruit elite QB's. You can win a lot of games around a great QB. They shouldn't depart from that.

I think he has a better job at Navy. The expectations are not crazy at Navy and he gets good kids. I know BYU has good kids but you are limited in your recruiting. The next Calvin Johnson or Adrian Peterson or RGIII or Cam Newton is not going to BYU.

A limited recruiting base being upset with an offense which minimizes emphasis on talent and maximizes results with execution?

They'll live...

They don't go to Navy but they sure as hell don't go to BYU. His expectations are lower at Navy. If he leaves Navy going to BYU is a mistake.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, if Niumatalolo is hired, he would have to give up the triple option.

Is Taysom Hill going to get another year? Those two together might could do some damage.

No one knows. Taysom was waiting until after the season to make up his mind. I don't know what impact the coaching change will have on that. With his injury history and the fact he's graduating, he may just go into finance or coaching.

He'd last about 3 quarters running the triple option.

Why the frick would they hire/he take the job if they don't want him to run his offense ?

I agree.
Running the option might hamper what already is a challenging task of scheduling high end teams as an independent.
But really paying a successful 10 year coach 950 k is the real problem.

I'm not sure about that. The reason the Service Academies don't recruit talent is very specific - if you're on an NFL track, you're crazy to go to one of them because of the five year minimum service commitment after graduation. The only people who play professional sports after their time at the Academies are those who just squeak into the leagues or if the rating services just completely missed them.

BYU doesn't have that problem. Their problem is the honor code. And also I've heard in the past that some students can be annoying about wanting to share their faith. But I've always thought that the honor code could be used to their advantage. "You can go to any school to get drunk and find loose women. But if you want to learn to be a man, come to BYU." I bet there are players who would be open to that message.
