Do you people not understand that michigan knew it was going to hire a firm from the get-go?
If I was a Michigan fan, I'd be more perturbed that they hired the same search firm that landed an incompetent AD and a know-nothing buffoon of a football coach the last go-around.

I look at this 2 ways right now:
1. Both Harbaugh and Miles are out and they really want to make sure they do their due diligence and find the right coach.
2. They want Miles and this is a way to tell Ole Fartstain Caar to get bent by having the firm justify it.

I wonder if the search firm was hired to help manage the internal politics at Michigan.

Apparently, it's hard to hire a new coach at some schools. Gotta bring in the professionals.

I think it's this but it hasn't happened yet. I don't believe one or both are out, but if that ends up being the case then this is what I believe to be the reasoning.

This is either smoke and mirrors or Miles isn't a sure deal. I think it's the later but Miles silence leads me to believe he is imterested in the job, otherwise, such speculation would require a clear response from Miles and LSU. I just hope Alleva knows no more raises and extensions. He's saddled us with Miles and he shouldn't turn it into a yoke of oppression.

Sometimes it is easier for a search firm to assist, especially if targets are under contract somewhere else.
You get some plausible deniability as well, both for UM and the targets. If someone asks have you spoken to so and so about the job, you can say no, because UM officials did not have direct contact.
This is the only reason a search firm makes sense. Its a go-between that isnt going to have all the scrutiny of Michigan head honchos.

dave brandon was a ceo of a big company. he is not stupid. he did a lot good things in michigan, raised a lot of money and upgraded the facilities.
before he was fired, he was working on the $300million south campus project.
his problem is he is a control freak. he wantd to be the ad and the coach as the same time.
today the news is michigan candidates are down to 4. jh, lm and two other unknown.
still wait for jh. the longer waiting means the chance to land jh is bigger

Can we pay their fee if they hire Miles?

this is kind of odd.
their top candidates seem to be pretty obvious; why do they need a search firm?
Colleges are the worst about this stuff, be it for coaches or president or naming, etc.
Hire a firm to rename the law school to "The University of California, Berkeley, School of Law," put together a committee to hire the coach everyone thinks you're going to hire, etc.

you need the firm as the shield. also these firms may find out some unexpected stuff such as intimate relationship with another female employee, a doctored resume etc.

Michigan has probably known for weeks who their next HC is.
1. Harbaugh, from reports, has said no.
2. Miles very quite
3. Mystery man
Search committee does its job in case some tool like Herbstreit blows the deal out of the water.

I know they have research capabilities and make things easier. That said, I just find it funny when a 6 month search for a name on a new arena in Dallas settles on "Dallas Arena" at a cost of a few hundred grand.
It just seemingly confirms the average person's thoughts about how businesses and universities and other large entities operate.

Ok, they really need to start taking things seriously soon.

Michigan hires search firm to help with football head coach search Michigan really is desperate now. No way Miles goes over to that sinking ship. This is looking like the Tennessee situation after Fulmer, look what it did to the Vols program.
Which could very well happen to LSU if Miles were to take the Michigan job.

QUOTE Why do this?
CYA... Interim AD wants to have someone else saying, "Take that guy" so he has someone to blame for the 12-24 next 3 years..

Comparing LSU to UT is ridiculous. They don't have the facilities/money/recruiting base LSU has.

And the hits just keep on coming
Multiple sources with knowledge of a Thursday meeting between the Michigan football team and Interim Athletic Director Jim Hackett reported to GoBlueWolverine on the condition of anonymity that the players were told the search for a new coach had been narrowed to four candidates.
An older report suggests that the number is actually a lot higher, as the Wolverines are considering more than ten candidates for their head coaching gig. It’s possible that the Wolverines have indeed talked to and are considering more than ten candidates, but it appears they have a defined frontrunner list that they’ll cross off first before going further down the list.
Those candidates haven’t been confirmed, but they may include Jim Harbaugh, Les Miles, Sean Payton and Steve Addazio. Of those names, Addazio seems the most likely as he’d be graduating to a higher profile program whereas the other three could be viewed as downgrading if they left their positions to take up a job at Michigan.
