sure...but again, how strong were those schedules? If we think the Big Ten is bad now, how bad was it then? Outside of Ohio State, the Big Ten was just terrible.

Neither of which are still there so why the hell would they hire them again?
No kidding. "Hey guys, remember when you helped us hire that terrible AD and terrible football coach a few years ago? Well break out your rolodex, because it's time to do it again!"
What kind of a clown college operations are they running up there?

quote:I have know idea, but historically colleges used to asked permission of schools before they talked the coach. But now so much of that is done through the agents they don't even have to talk directly to the coach to see if there is any interest.
their top candidates seem to be pretty obvious; why do they need a search firm?
This might be Michigan's way of getting around having to ask a school permission to visit with a coach. In Miles case, both schools have a lot to lose if this deal is not handled quietly and covertly.

Also a search firm is often used to save face. They can go out and talk to anyone and leave some grey area for the University to say they never offered to certain coaches who say they are not interested.

Right.
The only reason that game was so big is because it was the only game they played basically.

I've never understood why Michigan worships Bo Schembechler like they do, considering he never won a National Championship, only won 2 Rose Bowls (heck, Barry Alvarez won more), and didn't win a bowl game until his 12th season in Ann Arbor, especially considering how storied their program is.

2 weeks after the fire???
It would seem to imply their search is not going well, but who the hell knows.

1979 Gator North Carolina 15-17 L
Times were far different back then, not many bowls to go to. From 1971 to 1979 they won the Big Ten 4 times and went to the Rose Bowl. The 1973 season is pretty famous as well:

The 1973 Michigan Wolverines football team represented the University of Michigan in the 1973 college football season. In his fifth year as Michigan's head coach, Bo Schembechler led the team to a 10–0–1 record. It was Michigan's first undefeated season since 1948. The Wolverines outscored their opponents 330 to 68. Michigan was ranked #6 in both post-season polls.
The season ended with a 10-10 tie against Ohio State. Both teams entered undefeated, with the winner guaranteed a trip to the Rose Bowl. When the game ended in a tie, the Big Ten athletic directors voted in a secret ballot to send Ohio State to the Rose Bowl. Michigan athletic officials and fans were outraged, and Schembechler argued that Michigan was robbed of its on-field achievements. For months afterward, Ohio State newspapers were flooded with angry Wolverine letters and threats of lawsuits.
The argument for tOSU going to the Rose Bowl was Michigan was at home for the tOSU game that ended in a tie

You're asking that question to people who live in a state that considered electing a politician who went to jail for being corrupt...

Those guys in the 1970's had it pretty easy...
I think as long as there is this cult mentality that tries to channel those times when Michigan accumulated tons of wins against cupcakes, Michigan is going to struggle.
At least Harbaugh is an 80's guy...
They need a Saban/Meyer-type hire in a bad way.

A lot to do with his timing. Before he was hired, Michigan was in a down period. We were pretty average, stadium had trouble filling up, our program was trending down and Woody Hayes was kicking our arse.
Here comes Bo who from day 1 made it clear he wasn't going to back down from anyone including Woody. Bo winning his first matchup against tOSU when they were undefeated and ranked 1 or 2 began his legend, and the program experienced sustained (regional) success again under his tenure. He had a great love for this school and a great relationship with his players. By all accounts everyone who ever met him has good things to say about him.
It would sort of similar as if a coach came into Michigan today and turned us back into B1G title contenders every year and did well against Urban/Dantonio

Do you people not understand that michigan knew it was going to hire a firm from the get-go?

Also that this firm was hired from the get-go. Not sure why it's being talked about nationally now, but everyone up here has already known the AD has been consulting with a search committee and recruiting firm in case he can't get Harbaugh
