Dude, he got a raise every year while at LSU all the time flirting with every single NFL position that came along.
That's the NFL. He wanted a chance to succeed at the highest level.

I'm not sure if the Gumps offered more than he was making at Miami, but have to assume they did.
Nope, he took a paycut.

In any event quitting Miami and having a job lined up is a lot better than having his arse fired which is exactly what was going to happen.
Duh.

The clues have been in front of us for a while, but we just haven't put them together.

SABAN to WACO, but not to coach Baylor

He will live in WACO which is half way between Dallas and Austin and will will coach

READY????

the Longhorns on Saturdays
AND
the Cowboys (remember those rumors last year)on Sundays

Should be interesting. I have many reasons for thinking that he would be a lock to go to Penn State, especially with Urban out of the race, but that situation may have gotten TOO toxic.

Still, Penn State will clean house at the end of the season and the new AD will be under alot of pressure to make a huge hire. I still think they target Saban; just a matter of whether or not he'll jump into the current mess there.

Penn State will not get a big name coach. They will get one that will get them through the mess for a few seasons and then make a big hire, like when Alabama hired Mike Shula.

Saban was never going to Penn State. Texas may be another matter. I am hearing Penn State may contact Tony Dungy.

This stupid shite again? He has never taken a paycut. The yearly total he makes at Alabama is less than Miami (NFL vs college, duh) but the overall contract he signed was more than double what the Dolphins were gonna pay him. He did not take less money for the joy of coaching Alabama.

Get over yourself.

His Dolphins contract paid him $5 million a year for 5 years, 25 million total. Alabama gave him $32 million over 8 years. He started at like $3.5 million a year with yearly raises. He went from getting $5 million in 2006 from Miami to $3.5 million from Alabama in 2007. That is a pay cut.

32 million total vs 25 million total is not a pay cut, Cletus.

5 million a year down to 3.5 million is a paycut. The 32 million is not guaranteed. Had he gone 6-6 in 07, 08, and 09 he would have been fired and only made a base salary of $225,000 + $3,275,000 in 2007, $3,525,000 in 2008, and $3,675,000 in 2009 for a grand total of just over $11,000,000.

$11,000,000 < $15,000,000. Paycut.

That's assuming he coaches those 3 years in Miami with out get fired.

If it makes you guys fell better to think Bama is so fricking great NFL coaches just quit and take big pay cuts to go there knock yourself out.

If your argument hinges on a hypothetical firing, I'd say you've lost.

Ultimately, any NFL head coach who leaves for a college gig always takes a paycut if you are going strictly by yearly salary. Petrino took one for Arkansas. Kiffin for Tennessee. Wannstedt for Pittsburgh.

But if you wanna continue to proclaim that Saban took less money for the glory of the Alabama job, feel free. The rest of the nation will just continue to giggle at you.

Makes sense, it could happen. He is having some serious financial issues with a development in BR that went bust. He also knows LSU will kick his arse again this year and for sure next year. Saban is a whore for the cheese and I gotta think he has had about all he can stand of the gumps. Plus from what I have heard Mack Brown wants the North Carolina job.

You have to throw Petrino out of the mix. The dude flat out quit and went scurrying to Arkansas.
Wannstedt took the only gig he could. He was a burned out candle as far as NFL coaching was concerned.
Wasn't Kiffin fired and had nobody lined up to hire him?

Cool, where did you hear that? I suggested him when the scandal first broke, because he's the only guy who's both a big name and a particular reputation for being squeaky clean.

ETA: Saban to Penn St would be more believable than Texas IMO.

ETA2: Well, maybe not.

$aban may be one of the few active coaches with a future who has the stature to step into Paterno's shoes--if not his high water pants--and PSU may be one of the few schools ready to outspend Bama, et al. for his services.

So Saban told his owner one night he was going to be his coach next year then the next day left a note for everyone and was gone? With three games left in the season?

I get the feeling that Saban ran over Gout's dog about 5 years ago.
