What is your favorite true crime book ?
For me, it was definitely "Helter Skelter". I was maybe 13 when I first read it in the 70's, and it scared the shite out of me. Only book that came close was "In Cold Blood".
Would like to hear what book, or books you recommend in the true crime genre.
* Underboss by Peter Mass was pretty good as well. It's the story of Sammy the Bull Gravano, underboss to John Gotti.

I've read all three of those. All excellent. Another good one by Bugliosi is "The Sea Will Tell".

May be just because it’s the most recent one I read but Killers of the Flower Moon was pretty damn good.

The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson
Take places around the turn of the 19th century at a time when such a heinous crime could go undetected for so long.

Here are some I’ve read recently:
Mindhunter
Green River Running Red
Columbine
Illusion of Justice
The Innocent Man
Out of those Mindhunter is definitely my favorite. I read it before the show came out, so I didn’t jump on the bandwagon.

“ In. Old Blood” is pretty chilling.

I'm with the OP. "Helter Skelter", "In Cold Blood", "The Boston Strangler" are all good books about true crime.
I've also read books about Bundy, The Green River Killer, T. Cullen Davis, and a few others by Anne Rule who's titles escape me but deal with true crime.
Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" was a great book that was turned into an excellent movie. I particularly like the fact they filmed it in black and white.

As an attorney this book made me wretch, horrifying what happened before DNA.
I'll Be Gone In The Dark by Michelle McNamarra. About the East Area Rapist/Original Night Stalker. This one will put a chill down your spine as this guy goes from petty home invasion to rape to murder. Read it.

Devil in the White City
The French Connection read it dozens of times in my college years.
Weasel ? Supposedly by Jimmy "the Weasel" Fratianno? I see Ovid Demaris The Last Mafioso listed on Amazon, maybe that is it?

The Robert Graysmith book on the Zodiac Killer scared the shite out of me when I was 16.

Off topic a bit but when I was single and living in a real old shotgun house in the Lower 9th Ward, I started reading "The Exorcist" and would usually do so late at night.
That old house would always creak and pop, especially if it was windy outside. When that happened, I could feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and it would send chills down my spine while reading that damn book.
