I found RT airfare for 5 from Seattle to Rome for a trip last July 4 for $813 per ticket. That was just after the Thanksgiving holiday last year. I'd keep looking for airfare if I were you.

Florence. If you go to Italy and don't go to Florence you've wasted your whole trip IMO. Best city ive ever been to in the world. 3 days in Venice is way too many unless you're deadset on going there. I'd do 3 on Florence 2 in Venice (or just skip Venice all together)

I keep hearing that I should shorten Rome to 2, Florence to 3, and Venice to 4.

I am going to stretch my trip to one more day and have 10-nights instead of 9. I will have unlimited train passes and Florence is only an hour away from Venice. I also may do a day trip to Milan.

I would highly recommend a day in the country side or otherwise something not incredibly touristy. Small towns are fantastic, anywhere with water in Italy is great. Tons of lesser known beaches and lakes. Italy is a great country to just enjoy being in. One of our favorite things to do is just to go to the grocery store and get a bunch of picnic items for the day, and explore somewhere.

Its just really nice to plan a day away from the touristy things.

Milan is an industrial dump compared to the other three cities.

Two nights in Venice is plenty.

If you want to squeeze something else in do a day/night up in Lake Como.

This what I was actually meant when I said Milan. The racers on The Amazing Race visited there last season. It looked awesome. I know it's right near Milan.

Here's a vote for slowing the pace a bit. Forget about Milan, stay longer in either Florence or Rome or a smaller town between the two. How are you gonna have time for leisurely Italian lunches if you're scurrying across the dang country? When will you have time for the passigeiata (evening stroll), if you're stuck on a train to the next stop?

FOMO...let it go. Stick to Rome/Florence/Venice. Heck, just do two of those three and truly experience the places, don't just check sights off of a list.

I have been to Rome four times, Florence twice, and Venice twice. You cannot do justice to a Rome visit in 2 days. The Vatican Museum takes half a day minimum on its own. So do the Colosseum (which just opened its upper levels) and Forum. There are time savers; buy Colosseum/Vatican Museum tix ahead of time and get to St. Peters at 8 am and there are no lines.

You need more time in Rome than Venice. JMHO.

And day trip from home base. He could do Positano from Rome and the Tuscan wine region or Lake Como from Florence. Might want to overnight for the second one though.

Just depends on who I ask. I get different opinions on where to stay longer on these three cities, so I decided to split them evenly (3 nights each) and use as jump off points for day excursions if needed.

You're going to find yourself stretched very thin.

Assume transferring from one city to another takes a minimum of half a day. And in Italy, with workers strikes/laziness etc/bad scheduling of transportation options/and inner city gridlock during peak hours, it can get drawn out to a near whole day affair.

That means you could see 1.5-3 days of travel/setting roots in hotels/airbnbs, inner city transport. That's a big chunk of such a short time.

I would agree, but it all depends on how you do it. Some people take their time, pack a ton of shite that takes 2 hours to pack back up, have a big lazy breakfast, and take a 10am train. By the time they are checked in and unpacked after a 3 hour train its almost dinner time.

Its also very possible to pack one carry on each, take a 6am train, and be settled in at the new hotel by 10am.

I always recommend unseasoned travelers to try to spend 3-4 nights wherever they begin and end. That gives you plenty of time to settle in and relax. If you want to go hard in between on 1-2 night stays that's great.

Don't forget OP, you can always do something like 5-6 nights in Rome and day trip from there, then go straight to Venice.

This.

Wife and I spent 13 nights in Rome, Florence, and Venice in September. We did 6 nights in Rome, 5 in Florence, and 2 in Venice. Our experience was the same as we heard different things from different people.

There is so much to see in Rome and so many places to explore. Two days isn't scratching the surface. The two nights in Venice was more than enough, especially if cruise ships are there.

Everyone has said it, but I'll confirm it too.
2 nights in Venice is more than plenty.

Florence and Rome are musts. Period.
Milan is a dump. Don't bother.
Spend a day in wine country... just driving around and taking in the sights and drinking some awesome wine.

I would highly recommend the Amalfi coast.... even if it's just for one day or one night. Most beautiful place on Earth. Seriously.

Agreed. If you're going to be in that area, Verona and Padua are definitely worth seeing. Both are less than 2 hrs away. Much prettier cities than Venice.
