I absolutely love Old Homestead for steaks. I find the Highline overrated as far as attractions go. I also don't think the Empire State Building is time well spent either but you do get one hell of a view. World Trade museum is supposed to be really good.

what time of year? how many people? what do you enjoy doing normally?

i've written a few long posts on NYC, if you just search through here you can find some like this:

quote:

what area of brooklyn? make sure you check MTA's website before traveling anywhere to see what lines are closed this weekend. the 45 have been recently and that's a major line into brooklyn.

if she's a major history buff, then i'd say the met over the american museum of natural history. they also have a rooftop display that has beautiful views of the city...just as good as doing some top of the rock/empire state building shite, and for far cheaper.

it's right by central park, so you can make a full afternoon out of spending 3 hours there and an hour or so walking down in central park from there.

the highline is another nice area in chelsea near the hudson river. you can walk a good bit on that. stop and get pizza at artichoke on 10th ave and 17th street.

if you want to see the major touristy areas, all quickly, i suggest starting at grand central (take the train there)...going out and walking north up 5th avenue to 49th/50th Street so you can see 30 Rock and St. Patrick's. Then walk over to Broadway on 49th to look south and see times square and, if you want, walk into it.

you can do that within 1-2 hours if you want.

brooklyn bridge is fun, but be prepared for major crowds. and don't get in the bike lane

in brooklyn on saturdays in williamsburg, there's an outdoor fair called Smorgasburg. it will be packed, but it's a lot of great food.

just prepare for a lot of crowds anywhere.

unless you are planning on visiting ellis island and the museum there, it's not worth taking the ferry. you're better off finding a cruise on the hudson that will take you closer than the ferry ever would and you can drink and have a good time on the hudson and have beautiful views of the city.

Definitely go to the met, and hit up the rooftop exhibit, which has a bar and a beautiful view of the city. if you want to do any "top of the" top stuff, i highly suggest the WTC, especially at night at sunset. then you can get a drink up there as well.

the smith has good seafood, and i mentioned it in my other post. if you want to do central park, get north of 70th street. go to the ramble. it's my favorite little spot. just google it, and you'll find it.

5th avenue for shopping, especially in the 20s south to the higher teens. lots of great stores around there. tribecca has some good shops as well.

chelsea market is fun for a a quick lunch one day. then the highline from there.

walk around and explore. get lost. it's a great city.

My family always stays at the Bowery, it's a bit south of midtown but it's a great boutique hotel.

We stay at the Lexington. It is a Marriott Autograph property. It usually has very good rates given its location. SO likes it cause Marilyn Monroe lived there.

If you plan on doing tourist type things, perhaps you could get the CityPASS:
It includes:
quote:

The Empire State Building Experience
American Museum of Natural History
The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Top of the Rock Observation Deck OR Guggenheim Museum
Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island OR Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises
9/11 Memorial & Museum OR Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

CityPass is a good deal. I highly recommend it if you are planning on hitting multiple of those destinations.
