Arriving on Delta and Departing on United for an international flight.

Anyone know how much time I should give myself between flights?

At least 1 hr. United operates through Terminal 7/8 and Delta Terminal 5. You'll have to exit the airport and walk to 7/8 then go through security again. Unless I'm totally mistaken and the terminals are connected. (Dont think they are though).

Im assuming I also need to collect and recheck baggage? First time using multiple carriers.

I got fussed at by LAX for getting to airport too early but we were driving from San Diego and not sure what LA traffic was going to be.

I was facing the same decision and couldn't get it worked out (flying into LAX 14 hours Taiwan) so I decided to just get a hotel room for the night and maybe head over to Santa Monica or something.

Yes you need to walk or take a cab in between terminals to get to international terminal. Recollect bags when switching carriers.

Sucks. LAX is huge POS and worst major airport in the US I've experienced.

No. As long as you can provide your itinerary for United to Delta when you check your bag at your original airport they can transfer your bag...I'm assuming this is an international departure, not arrival.

I took the terminal bus as I was connecting United to Asiana.

It's a bit stressful, as traffic in front of all the terminals was a real clusterfrick and the bus took forever to arrive, even with the fact I didn't check bags.

I believe its American Airlines which has a tunnel from their terminal to the international terminal so you don't have to do security again.

ETA: Stop checking bags folks. Save yourselves! Even my wife can get her shite down to a carry on and under the seat bag.

Thanks. I've only been through LAX once and I remember it being a complete cluster.

MSY-LAX on Delta
LAX-MEL on United

Wife and 2 kids for 2 weeks, checking bags is the only option.
