For me north bound on the AT up the South Arm past Mahoosuc Notch. 1900' elevation gain in a mile. just brutal.

Second place was Pemigewasset Loop. 34 miles and abiut 10k' gain and loss. But worth the views.

I'm loving the hiking threads.

shiiiit...

Grand Teton National Park, Day one of three (roughly 12 miles):
The ascent from Phelps Lake to Death Canyon Shelf. That was ROUGH for first time backpackers carrying a bear cannister, and wayyy too much weight. My girlfriend wanted to kill me for good reason. Pics to come later.
After the first 600 feet

CLIMBING A LOT EARLY ON

WHNE I TOLD HER THAT WE SOMEHOW NEEDED TO GET ABOVE THAT TREELINE ON THE SHELF SHE WAS NONE TOO PLEASED. LONG DAY!

1,000 FEET in A SHORT DISTANCE TO GET TO THE TOP...AFTER 9 MILES OF TOUGH CANYON HIKING FOR INEXPERIENCED BACKPACKERS...

BUT THAT VIEW...

THE MORNING AFTER/CAMPSITE...35 DEGREES IN LATE JULY

LOOKING BACK ON A DAY'S WORK

For recreation, Hidden Canyon in Zion. Only 2.2 miles, but all up the side of the canyon.

Not for recreation, in August of 1994, I did a 20 mile ruck march with full gear in combat boots around Ft. McClellan, AL. Started @ 4:30 and finished about 11:30. My feet still hurt.

My pack is normally under 20 pounds for a backpacking trip. Hats off to you.

Grand Canyon rim to rim. S to N. Descent is nice. 107 degrees in bottom of canyon and then up to north rim.

I think we'll do this in June now. This is why I love this board.

MT Mitchell. Had a full pack and camped on top. Everyone else I saw did an up and down so they didn't have packs.

I was NOT in shape and boy did I feel it

I realize this is child's play to some

I find myself hiking to the top of stuff only if I can ski down. Gotta get up to get down.

Long's Peak in Colorado several times. Almost a mile of vertical, and at 14,256 ft the air gets pretty thin (I can't imagine 20,000 ft). Thousands of people do this one every year so really not a huge deal but it's not easy either.

Backpacked solo from the top of Trail Ridge Road back down to the Fern Lake trailhead in RMNP. I thought it would be easy, only a few miles per day and all downhill. But it turns out that bushwhacking can get brutal. It started with a bog above timberline, then dense trees that were nearly impassable. Then a stream crossing where my glasses fell off and it took an hour to find them; and finally some cliffs where a last second grab of a tree root saved me from a bad fall. Long's Peak was easier.

The elevation profile actually looks quite difficult, and I believe Mitchell is one of the 58 peaks in America with "super prominence" or whatever they call it. More than 5,000 feet of prominence for a 6,684 ft mountain aint no joke...

Okay, if going to Zion make sure to do The Narrows, Hidden Canyon, Emerald Pools and of course Angels Landing.

The Narrows is easy, do it the afternoon you get there. Emerald Pools can be done in a morning. Hidden Canyon an afternoon.

Do Angel's last. It's all day and will wear you out.

If you need a clinic, drive into town. The clinic at Zion is crap. Alajones2 had an ear infection while we were there and we wasted a day dealing with the lack of a clinic.

We aren't staying in Zion for long at all...kind of a morning hike while passing through. We're doing quantity over quality in Utah. Then we'll get well acquainted with Colorado.

So you're 2.2 miler will be perfect. Maybe that and an easy bike ride and we're gone. On to Bryce.

If your just passing through, I'd suggest the Narrows, then hike the canyon floor trail back to the main gate.

Obviously up to you though.

Bryce Canyon can also be done in an afternoon. The Hoo-doos can be done in a couple of hours. The trail was pretty crowded.

Make sure to drive through Grand Staircase on your trip.

Plan is Zion in morning, Bryce in afternoon.
Camp just outside of Bryce (already reserved). Short hike/bike in morning then take a south turn from hwy 12 en route to Cap Reef. That south turn takes us into Escanteles or whatever the hell it's called. I think that's the grand staircase to which you're referring.
Spend the night in Cap Reef, burn some time the next day before staying in Blanding, then hit Canyonlands and Arches before sleeping under the La Sal mountain sky.

ETA: Did you try hiking the Henry mts? SO secluded.
