Carl Sandberg home National Historic Site is just south of town. Interesting place with nice grounds and easy walks.

do a search, it's been discussed alot previously(myself included)
Asheville is a great mountain town. A very modern progressive city tucked away in the mountains.
a quick list of stuff you need to do:
1)hiking, whitewater rafting(if warm)
2)blueridge parkway hiking, sightseeing
3)Biltmore-even more impressive in person. You can spend a full day here
4)Lexington Ave-shopping, breweries, restaurants.
5)beer-if you like beer, there's no better place. This little town has a ton of great breweries. You can bring your kids into most of them I believe

Hike Bent Creek Experimental Forest and get a great view of the Biltmore up on the ridge.

I spent a weekend there. Town is weird as hell. I'm not sure what people do for work.
Went to about 15 breweries though.
Drum circle on Friday or whatever is hilarious.

I went for the first time in October. We had a blast.
Biltmore is a must
Breweries are great - Wicked Weed Pub and Wicked Weed Funkatorium are musts. Also Burial was great.
Related to above, go to Sierra Nevada Brewery. That place was amazing.
We white water rafted and did some ziplining. Also did a little hiking up some mountains and to a few waterfalls.
The weather was beautiful. Fall leaves were everywhere, and it hadn't rained in a few weeks so the leaves were still in the trees.
Everywhere we ate was delicious. The Admiral might have been the best food. The place is completely unnassuming but the food is incredible. Had the seared elk loin and General Tso's sweetbreads for a starter. Fantastic!

Come to Greenville, sc for an afternoon. Eat lunch and dinner and walk around downtown. It is worth the short drive

drinks and lunch or dinner at The Grove Park Inn. If the patio is open grab a drink there.
The place is worth a look - its a cool old hotel (now run by Omni)

quote:I used to live in Asheville and this is my first recommendation to anyone. It's an old hotel built in the Arts & Crafts style. It looks like something you'd find out west. They encourage nonguests to come and visit and spend time in the hotel. You can chill in the lobby by two huge fireplaces (8' tall inside burning tree trunks) and order flights of Asheville beer. Great vistas from the lobby or back porch.

are you going for beer mainly? if so stay downtown where you can walk to all of the breweries
this is from a post of mine several months ago. we went last summer.

my favorite was wicked weed. definitely hang in the basement.
funkatorium was aweome.
burial is fantastic and probably my third favorite behind WW and funkatorium.
one world brweing has a cool atmosphere. it's under farm burger. they had a blue grass band playing that was legit.
thirsty monk has a nice local feel. go into their basement to enjoy the belgians. visit their rooftop bar for cocktails and great view.
asheville brewing co had some good beers and is worth the stop.
twin leaf brewing was surprisingly good. they have games (ping pong, etc) and several excellent beers (a mexican stout, peach kettle sour when we were there)
bhramari brewhouse was another one that was surprisingly good.
green man beers were meh. cool brewery though.
new belgium was meh. very clean but sterile-feeling. nothing unusual on tap there.
wedge was disappointing. wedge ipa is english style. not worth the drive to me but several here love it.
we didn't go out to sierra nevadea but i hear their food is good and the grounds are pretty.
there's a sake distillery (ben's tune up) which was a nice change of place
as far as food, my favorites were tupelo honey and the admiral. brunch at tupelo honey is killer. the admiral is in west asheville but is worth the trip.
black bird was solid. barley's had decent pizza and a nice tap list.
farm burger was about what you'd expect but good.
didn't get to go to white duck taco.
eta: to anyone going in the future and focusing on beer, i highly recommend staying at the downtown inn. you have to call to get a room and won't find it on expedia, etc. it was very cheap and in the middle of the breweries. it is pretty much a motel but extremely clean.
Also there is a new Irish pub about 3 doors down from tupelo honey that has WW freak of nature on tap. Good place to grab a beer while waiting on your brunch table at Tupelo honey

Yeah Asheville has a different type of hipster...they actually mean it. I much prefer faux Austin hipsters....and least they make good tacos and cocktails.
